This is a superb large antique Burr Walnut veneered jewellery box. It has a beautiful newly refurbished interior and has also been restored. The box is Victorian, circa 1870.
This box has a wonderful Burr Walnut veneer which has beautiful figuration and a warm rich colour. It has a solid Mahogany and solid Pine carcass, making it a sturdy and weighty box.
There is a fabulous large inlaid brass cartouche to the lid and an inlaid brass escutcheon to the keyhole. Both are original and have a decorative star shape.
The box is complete with its original brass stop hinges which hold the lid upright.
The box has a replacement working lock and keep. These are solid brass and Victorian like the box. A new key has been fitted to the lock. This work has been carried out by our skilled box restorer.
The bottom of the box has a new felt covering which will protect the surfaces of furniture.
The interior has its original storage tray at the top and its original drawer below. These and also the inside of the lid, have been beautifully refurbished by our skilled box restorer.
The tray has multiple different sized compartments. Those to the front row are an ideal size for small pieces of jewellery such as rings, earrings, pendants and brooches. The centre compartment of the middle row is larger and ideal for bangles and watches. The compartments on either side of this one are a nice size for linked bracelets. The rear narrow compartment is lengthy and ideal for laying out necklaces and chains. All of these compartments have new teal blue satin linings.
The drawer is made of solid Mahogany and has its original solid brass swing handle and fitments. Its compartment has a new padded satin teal blue panel. The compartment is large and spacious and deep enough to hold beads and bangles.
The inside of the lid is absolutely beautiful. It has a new teal blue satin raised panel in the centre and new teal blue satin linings to the walls. The panel is surrounded by a beautiful frame of high quality patterned floral paper.
Our Jewellery Box Restorer
You can read about Jim, our wonderful skilled box restorer, by visiting our About Us page.
This wonderful large box is in very good condition for its 150 years of age.
The veneer is still in great condition overall, just some minor surface scratches and superficial fine cracks in a few areas. These aren't overly noticeable.
There are some dints and nibbles along the edges of the box and there is a small repair to the right side of the lock. These areas have been smoothed and refinished.
The above minor flaws are as we'd expect on a box of this age which has been loved and used. They do not spoil the beautiful overall appearance of the box, rather they add to its charm.
The interior linings, being new, are in excellent unworn condition.
The box locks securely.
