Beautiful Japanese vintage musical jewellery box. Beautiful hand painted decoration both to the exterior and interior. Original linings and working lock and key. The box is still in superb condition.
FREE UK NEXT DAY DELIVERY. We Ship Worldwide.
This is a beautifully decorated Japanese jewellery box which is still in excellent condition. It is vintage and musical, and dates to the 1940s/1950s.
The Exterior
The box has a lovely black lacquered finish and is decorated all over with beautiful hand-painted Japanese landscape scenes. These scenes include Mount Fuji, hills, a temple, trees and sailing boats.
The scene on the lid is surrounded by a beautiful frame of inlaid Abalone shell. This is colourful and has a beautiful irridescent shine.
There is a pretty engraved metal escutcheon to the keyhole.
The box is complete with its original hinges and original working lock and key.
An original label is on the bottom of the box, showing its design is from the 'IRENE' series.
The exterior black lacquer has been newly polished to bring back some of its original glossy sheen.
The Interior
The interior has a compartment at the top. This raises up on its own accord as you open the lid of the box. It is attached to quality cantilever hinges which allow this automatic lift-up mechanism. The compartment has two hinged lids that are complete with their original ring handles and tassels. They have a black lacquered finished and hand-painted scenes, in keeping with that on the box's exterior.
There is a further compartment beneath that at the top and the musical movement is concealed beneath a black lacquered ledge to the right of this. There is a ring storage section to the front of this area.
The inside of the lid has a fitted mirror with further hand-painted decoration. It again features Mount Fuji and also a Geisha girl.
The compartments and ring storage have their original peachy orange ribbed cord linings and the mirror is beautifully framed with the same.
The Musical Movement
The movement plays a pretty tune, the title of which we haven't deciphered. The winding key is located on the bottom of the box.
Operating The Movement
Six turns of the key are sufficient to wind up the musical movement. The music stops as it should, when the lid is closed or when the movement has fully unwound.
Notes On Vintage Musical Movements and Locks
As with all musical boxes, care should be taken not to overwind the movement. Over winding will result in the movement malfunctioning.
Vintage movements/locks are already old and so will naturally have some wear from age and use. They may occasionally deteriorate or malfunction over time.
We are not responsible for movements/locks that may deteriorate/malfunction from further age and use once a box is purchased. Neither are we responsible for movements that malfunction from overwinding.
Please check the movement and lock as soon as you receive your box. They will be checked again prior to posting.
Please read our returns policy which includes our policy on musical movements and locks.
Condition
This lovely box is in excellent condition for its 70/80 years of age. It has sound structure and the musical movement and lock are in good working order.
The colours of the paint are still vivid.
The interior cord linings are still neatly fitted and have no splits or fraying. There is one small mark in the top compartment.
The mirror is still lovely and clear, and has no chips or cracks.
Although the lock is working, it is a bit fiddly to get the key into it. It is therefore advisable to use the key for decorative purposes only.
History
This box was made after the 2nd World War when goods imported from Japan were marked 'FOREIGN' (as this box is on its original label). It was thought that if they were marked 'Japan' they would be boycotted by much of the British population due to the war.
