This is a beautiful antique jewellery box, dating to 1820. It is complete with its original working lock and key.
This box has a beautiful Mahogany veneer and a wonderful Roman style sarcophagus shape.
The Mahogany has beautiful figuration and a warm rich colour.
There is a lovely inlaid hardwood escutcheon to the lock and decorative brass swing handles to the sides. These are not original to the box but are from the late Regency period. There are embossed figure heads (Roman?) and scrolling vines on the handles, and a design no is embossed onto one of the handles. The handles were added recently by our skilled box restorer.
The box stands raised on its original squat bun feet and is complete with its original working lock and key. It is also complete with its original 'stop' hinges which prevent the lid from falling back. The bottom of the box has some lovely original carpenters marks (small scored Roman Numerals).
The interior has a single deep storage compartment. This has thick padded velvet linings which are a beautiful vibrant teal blue shade. There is a shimmery like appearance to the velvet. The photos have not captured the true beautiful colour of the velvet. Please see further details of the linings below.
This box started life as an expensive tea caddy and was converted into a jewellery box many years ago. The interior linings are original to the conversion. We estimate the conversion to be around 1910/1920 in date.
This superb antique box is in very good condition for its 200 years of age. It has sound structure and only minor wear commensurate of age and use. It has a few little dings/scratches but no nasty knocks or deep scratches. The wear is as we'd expect on a box of this age, which has been loved and used for its purpose.
There is some wear from handling to the interior velvet linings. predominantly along their top edges. Again as we'd expect on a box that has been used.
The lock is operating perfectly and the hinges are in excellent working order.
