The exterior This box has a beautiful burl Maple veneer and pretty floral inlay to the lid. All of the wood has been beautifully polished and varnished, and has a wonderful smooth, glossy finish. There is beautiful curvature to the sides of the box and the lid has a lovely shallow arch. The box is complete with its original long piano hinge. This is a quality 'stop' hinge which prevents the lid from falling back. The box stands raised on its original tapered feet and the bottom of the box has retained its original song title label. Please note that there is no key for this box. The interior The interior has a single storage compartment and the musical movement is cased to the right of this. There is further storage space upon the ledge of the casing, and the casing can be removed should the movement ever require attention. All of the interior has a beautiful soft, deep orange velour lining. The Musical Movement The movement plays the beautiful Italian tune 'Isle of Capri'. This song was first published in 1934, with its music and lyrics being written by Wilhelm Grosz (aka Hugh Williams) and Jimmy Kennedy. It has since been recorded and performed by numerous popular artists, such as Gracie Fields in 1934 and Frank Sinatra in 1957. It featured on Frank Sinatra's album, Come Fly with Me. The movement is in perfect working order. Operating The Musical Movement The musical movement is operated via the winding key on the bottom of the box. 7 turns of the key are sufficient to wind up the movement. The music stops as it should, when the lid is closed, or when the movement is fully unwound. Notes On Vintage Musical Movements As with all musical boxes, care should be taken not to over wind the movement. Over winding will result in the movement malfunctioning. We are not responsible for movements that are over wound or for movements which deteriorate from further age and use, once the box is purchased. Please read our returns policy which includes our policy on musical movements. Condition This wonderful box is in excellent condition for its 40 plus years of age. All of the inlay is present and intact, and the box is structurally sound. There is very little wear to this box, just a couple of superficial craze lines to the varnish on the lid. These are barely noticeable. The hinge is in perfect working order, as is the musical movement. The interior velour lining is in lovely condition, just minor light wear along the edge to that on the casing. It is clean and free from splits and frays. The casing has been designed to be removed and hence occasionally drifts away from its position. It is easily pushed back into place.
