This is a beautiful Art Deco musical jewellery box, dating to the 1920s.
This box is made of solid Mahogany and has a beautiful Burr Walnut veneer. It has a stylish streamlined rectangular shape and a nice brass cartouche on the lid. This can be personalised with an engraved name, initials or date. There is a beautiful inlaid frame on the lid, made of Boxwood and Tulipwood.
The box stands raised on its original turned bun feet, which are finished with lovely brass tips, and the box has its original brass stop hinges. These prevent the lid from extending too far back.
There are handwritten scripts on the bottom of the box by two of its previous owners. These give some information on the history of the box and add to its charm! Please see image 5. The new owner of this box could also write some script, to further add to the history. There is also a nice impressed registration number on the bottom, placed there at the time of the box's manufacture. This is a good indicator of quality.
The interior has a single storage compartment and the musical movement is nicely cased to the right of this. There is space above the ledge of the casing where further pieces of jewellery can be stored. The base of the compartment has a new fitted panel, lined with pastel turquoise blue satin, and the ledge of the casing is newly lined with the same satin to match.
The Musical Movement
The movement plays a very pretty tune but we have not been able to decipher its title. It winds up via the key on the bottom of the box.
The movement is currently in excellent working order and playing its tune at the correct speed.
Operating The Musical Movement
5 turns of the key are sufficient to wind up the musical movement. The music stops as it should, when the lid is closed, or when the movement is fully unwound.
Notes on Vintage Musical Movements
As with all musical boxes, care should be taken not to over wind the movement. Over winding will result in the movement malfunctioning. We are not responsible for movements that are over wound or for movements which deteriorate from further age and use, once the box is purchased.
Please read our returns policy which includes our policy on musical movements.
This box is in very good condition for its 90 plus years of age. The hinges are in perfect working order and the interior linings, being new, are in pristine condition.
There is minor light superficial wear to the exterior.
There are natural striations and variations of colour within the Burr Walnut veneer.
Please use the following measurements to ensure the box is the right size for your requirements.
13.0 by 9.7cm with a 4.8cm depth.
9.8 by 6.8cm with a 1.7cm depth.
