This is a vintage musical jewellery box, made in England in the 1960s. It has its original working lock and key and its original retailers label on the bottom.
The box has a cream textured faux leather finish. It has a stylish domed lid with gold metal trim and its original gold metal clasp/lock and key. The trim has a lovely textured diamond pattern.
The box stands raised on its original resin feet. It has its original gold metal hinges.
The bottom of the box has retained its original gold metal retailers label. It is stamped 'Tallent of OLD BOND STREET, MADE IN ENGLAND'. Information on the retailer is given below.
The interior has two storage compartments. There is a ring storage section in the centre at the front, and the musical movement is cased behind this. The compartments, ring storage and the movement's casing, all have their original red plush velvet linings.
There is a lovely round platform with three waltzing couples, upon the movement's casing. The platform rotates and the waltzers spin around when the musical movement is in operation. The ladies have beautiful pearlescent white gowns and the gentlemen are in suits with tailed jackets.
The inside of the lid has beautifully fitted vertical mirror panels. The waltzers are nicely reflected in these. When you hold the box at certain different angles there appear to be six or more waltzing couples.
There are beautiful padded red silk panels on either side of the mirrors. The silk is high quality watered silk and it has a beautiful shimmer.
There is a cream silk ribbon stay to the interior which holds the lid upright.
Two half pennies dated 1975 and 1979 were found inside this box. These will be included with the box as they are part of its history. The dates of the coins may be of some sentiment to the new owner.
The Musical Movement
The movement plays 'Invitation to the Waltz' which is very apt for this box! Please feel free to call us if you'd like to listen to the tune before purchasing this box.
Operating The Musical Movement
The movement is operated via the winding key on the bottom of the box. 4-5 turns of the key are required to play the tune in full. The movement and rotation of the platform/dancers begins slowly and then speeds up.
The movement is in good working order, playing the tune at its correct tempo. The music stops as it should, when the lid is closed or when the movement is fully unwound.
Notes On Vintage Musical Movements And Locks
Care must be taken not to overwind the movement. Over winding will result in the movement malfunctioning.
Vintage movements and locks are already old and so will naturally have some wear from age and use. They may occasionally malfunction and/or deteriorate over time.
We are not responsible for movements and locks that may deteriorate or malfunction from further age and use once a box is purchased. Neither are we responsible for movements that malfunction from overwinding.
Please ensure the movement and lock are still working as soon as you receive your box. They will be checked again prior to posting.
You can view our full returns policy which includes musical movements and locks, by visiting our Payments And Returns page.
