This is a wonderful Art Deco jewellery box with a very stylish briefcase design. It dates to the 1930s and is covered with valuable Alligator skin.
This box has a real Alligator skin covering which is a lovely warm chestnut brown shade. It has a beautiful high-quality sprung brass catch/lock and a lovely carrying strap with brass fitments. The catch/lock is stamped BRITISH MAKE.
The catch securely closes the box but please note there is no key for the lock.
The carrying strap is attached to the drop-down flap at the front of the box. The flap drops down when you release the catch. You release the catch by simply sliding its button to the right. The button is to the right of the keyhole.
The lid is complete with its original quality brass stop hinges which hold the lid upright.
The bottom of the box has its original vinyl covering.
The Alligator Skin
The Alligator skin has been superbly positioned to show off its umbilical scar. This runs vertically across the centre of the lid and the back of the box, between the tiles of the skin. An Alligator's umbilical scar is much more elaborate than that of a Crocodile's because it is wider and has a distinctive webbed pattern. This makes Alligator skin much more sought after and in turn more expensive than crocodile skin. The Alligator's umbilical scar is so impressive that quality manufacturers make it a feature on boxes, handbags and purses etc. They most often place it prominently down the centre of their goods.
The top of the interior has three compartments and a ring storage section. Beneath these is a further single compartment which is larger in size.
The top compartments slide out to the side via high-quality cantilever hinges.
All four compartments, plus the inside of the lid, have their original padded silk panels. The inside of the drop-down flap also has its original silk lining. The silk is beautiful high-quality watered silk. The inside walls are covered in Alligator skin.
The ring storage section has its original velvet covering.
This box is still in excellent condition despite its 85 plus years of age. There is very little wear to the Alligator skin and only minor wear/tarnish to the brass catch/brass fitments.
The interior silk and velvet linings are still in excellent condition. They are neatly fitted and have no stains, splits or fraying.
There is minor age/friction wear to the bottom of the box, just along the edges/corners of the vinyl covering.
