This is a wonderful vintage musical jewellery box, playing the beautiful tune 'Greensleeves'. It was made in Sorrento in Italy, and it dates to the 1980s.
The exterior has a beautiful deep teal blue enamelled finish. The enamel is vitreous and has a gorgeous subtle shimmer. These beautiful vitreous enamelled finishes are rare on Italian Sorrento boxes.
The lid has very decorative inlay which is made from several varieties of wood. It also has a lovely Mahogany veneered frame and beautiful Satinwood stringing. The inlay features a scrolled musical score sheet, a mandolin, an oboe, and beautiful leafy vines.
The entire exterior has a high polished finish. It is ultra-smooth and has a gorgeous glossy shine.
The box is complete with its original, polished, gold metal piano hinge.
The box stands raised on its original, polished, gold metal bun feet.
The bottom of the box has retained its original Made In Italy label.
The interior has a beautiful Mahogany veneer which matches the frame on the lid. It has a single small storage compartment on the left which includes a lovely ring storage section.
The musical movement is cased to the right of the compartment.
The compartment and casing have soft plush felt linings to protect jewellery. These are a lovely crimson red shade and have a gorgeous velvety texture. The casing has a lid (also covered with felt) and beneath this is a perspex cover which protects the musical movement. The lid and cover can be removed if the movement ever requires attention.
The Musical Movement
The movement plays the beautiful tune 'Greensleeves' which has a medieval English folk sound. The music was anonymously composed in 1580. It has been widely believed that King Henry VIII wrote this music for Anne Boleyn after she allegedly rejected his attempts to seduce her. There is no real evidence to prove this, however. The piece is based on an Italian style of composition which did not reach England until after Henry's death. It is therefore more likely to be Elizabethan.
The movement is in perfect working order and plays the tune at its correct speed. The music stops as it should, when the movement is unwound or when the lid is closed.
Operating The Musical Movement
The movement is operated via the winding key on the bottom of the box. Five turns of the key are required to fully wind the movement.
Notes On Vintage Musical Movements
We would like to make you aware that vintage movements can occasionally malfunction. They are already old and will naturally have some wear from age and prior use.
Care should be taken not to overwind the movement as this will result in the movement malfunctioning. We are not responsible for movements that are overwound. Neither are we responsible for movements which deteriorate from further age and use once boxes are purchased.
Please check the movement is operating correctly as soon as you receive the box. It will be checked again prior to shipping.
Please read our returns policy which includes our policy on musical movements.
