This is a lovely vintage jewellery box, made in Sorrento, Italy. It dates to the 1940s and has beautiful hand-painted decoration.
This box is made of solid Olivewood. The lid has pretty hand-painted flowers and a beautiful strip of micro mosaic inlay. This type of inlay is known as 'tesselation'. There is a lovely curved design to the base of the box and the flowers have been newly repainted.
The lid and the lock flap are complete with their original hinges.
The box has its original lock but there is NO key with it.
Olivewood has a distinctive grain and rich colour, and characteristic brown and yellow streaks. These features make it a sought after wood for decorative items such as jewellery boxes.
Olivewood is also favoured for its hardness. It is a strong durable wood with a fairly high density, and it takes well to cutting and polishing.
The Olive tree primarily grows in the coastal regions of the Mediterranean. Its wood has been used for many years by Italian box makers in particular. It is also a favoured wood in areas of the Holy Lands such as Jerusalem.
Mosaic Tesselation Inlay
This type of inlay is skillfully created with hundreds of tiny pieces of wood. It is painstakingly put together over many, many hours, to form a beautiful mosaic pattern. Several varieties of wood are used, to add colour and dimension to the mosaic.
The interior has two compartments at the top and a further larger compartment beneath. The top compartments are hinged and swing open to the side. All three compartments have their original red felt linings.
The inside of the lid has a new hand-painted plaque with purple flowers against a blue background. The painting is bespoke and unique to this box only. The plaque has been added to cover a cracked mirror. The mirror would've been very difficult to remove and attempting to do so could've damaged the lid.
This wonderful old box is in very good condition for its 70 plus years of age.
All of the mosaic inlay is present and secure, and the box has sound structure.
The interior linings, being original, have some marks and light wear. This is as we'd expect on a box of this age which has been loved and used for its purpose.
There is slight movement to the hinge of the right compartment but it still functions well.
