This is a lovely early vintage box, given as an award for winning the Police First Aid Challenge Cup in 1931. It is a wonderful object of social history that will especially appeal to those in the Police force or those who have a keen interest in policing.
This box is made of solid Oak which has beautiful figuration, patina and colour. It has a novel barrel shape design and beautiful beaded edging.
The box has a stylish metal clasp and its original metal bun feet. It also has a beautiful stylish metal 'butterfly' hinge. This is a quality stop hinge which holds the lid upright.
There is a polished sterling silver shield on the lid which is fully hallmarked and engraved.
The Silver Shield / Hallmark & Makers Stamp
The engraving on the shield reads "COMMEMORATING OUR WINNING THE POLICE FIRST AID CHALLENGE CUP 1931. B.C.C EE (Cap')".
The shield has a full Birmingham Assay Office hallmark with date letter F for 1930. It has the makers stamp AC CO LD for Alexander Clark & Co Ltd. These silversmiths were in production from 1912 to 1977 and made various silver items including medals and trophy cups.
The interior has a single storage compartment which is lined with thin panels of wood.
This box is in excellent condition for its age. It is structurally sound and free from splits/cracks.
The clasp is still firmly attached and keeps the lid securely closed.
The hinge is still in very good working order and the bun feet are still securely attached.
There is minor light age related wear to the Oak.
