This is a beautiful antique papier mache box which is suitable for jewellery or trinkets. It dates to the Victorian period, circa 1870/1880.
The exterior has a glossy black lacquered finish and a hand painted Butterfly, Daisies and Forget Me Nots. All of these subjects have symbolic meanings, descriptions of which are given below.
The Victorians were big on symbolism and decorated many items with subjects that would be endearing.
Flower And Butterfly Symbolism
The Daisies represent purity and innocence.
The Forget Me Nots, as their name indicates, have the endearing sentiment "Remember Me".
The Butterfly represents the soul and the rebirth and resurrection of life.
The interior has a vibrant red lacquered finish.
This box started life as an expensive ladies glove box. It now makes a very beautiful box for storing jewellery, trinkets or keepsakes.
This beautiful box is in very good condition for its 130/140 years of age. The lacquer is still in lovely condition and there is no loss to the wonderful painted decoration. There is minor light wear as we'd expect on a box of this age.
Please use the following measurements to ensure the box is the right size for your requirements.
