This is a beautiful Art Deco musical jewellery box, made in Italy in the 1930s. It has beautiful inlaid decoration, and an eye catching futuristic form which was popular throughout the Art Deco period.
The box is complete with its original working lock and key. It also has its original piano 'stop' hinge, and stands raised on its original tapered resin feet.
About The Inlay
The box has both micro mosaic inlay, and beautiful marquetry inlay on the lid.
The mosaic inlay is known as 'tesselated inlay'. This type of inlay is made up of 100s or 1000s of tiny pieces of wood, painstakingly put together to form intricate mosaic designs. The mosaic inlay on this box features chequered patterns, flowers and diamonds.
The marquetry inlaid panel on the lid features birds and scrolling leafy vines.
The interior has a single storage compartment and the musical movement is cased to the right of this. There is further storage space upon the ledge of the casing.
The compartment has its original padded and quilted satin panel. The interior walls and casing are lined with the same satin. The satin is a lovely pastel peach colour.
The inside of the lid has its original inset oval mirror. This has an inlaid frame around it.
The Musical Movement
The movement is in good working order, playing the tune at its correct speed. The music stops as it should, when the lid is closed or when the movement is fully unwound.
We have not been able to decipher the title of the tune.
Operating The Musical Movement
The movement is operated via the winding key on the bottom of the box. 5 turns of the key are sufficient to wind up the musical movement.
Notes About Locks And Musical Movements
As with all musical boxes, care should be taken not to over wind the key. Over winding will result in the movement malfunctioning.
We would like to make you aware that vintage locks and musical movements can suddenly malfunction at any time. They are already very old and will naturally have some wear from age and use.
We are not responsible for locks or movements that malfunction from further age and use, once a box is purchased. Please ensure the lock and movement are working as soon as you receive your box.
You can view our full returns policy which includes locks and movements, by visiting our Payments And Returns page.
This wonderful box is in good condition for its 85 years of age. It is structurally sound and has no nasty knocks or scratches.
All of the inlay is present and intact.
The exterior has minor age related wear.
There are some marks on the interior mirror, but it is smooth and free from chips and cracks.
There are some stains to the interior satin. This is as we'd expect in a genuine old box which has been loved and used for its purpose.
We do not recommend cleaning the satin as doing so could spoil its colour and cause damage.
In our opinion the above flaws do not spoil the beautiful overall appearance of the box, but rather add to its charm.
The box may not make a suitable gift for those who would prefer a near perfect vintage box.
Please take this into consideration before making your purchase.
Please use the following measurements to ensure the box is the right size for your requirements.
