This is a beautiful Art Deco musical jewellery box, made in Italy in the 1930s.
This box has beautiful inlay and a futuristic form which was popular throughout the Art Deco period. It is complete with its original working lock and key and also has its original piano 'stop' hinge. This holds the lid upright. The box stands raised on its original tapered resin feet.
About The Inlay
This box has both micro mosaic and beautiful marquetry inlay.
The mosaic inlay is known as 'tesselated inlay'. This type of inlay is made up of 100s or 1000s of tiny pieces of wood, painstakingly put together to form intricate mosaic designs. The mosaic inlay on this box features chequered patterns, flowers and diamonds.
The marquetry inlaid panel on the lid features birds and scrolling leafy vines.
The interior has a single storage compartment and the musical movement is cased to the right of this. There is further shallow storage space upon the ledge of the casing.
The compartment has its original padded and quilted satin panel. The interior walls and casing are lined with the same satin. The satin is a lovely pastel peach shade.
The inside of the lid has its original inset oval mirror. This has an inlaid frame around it.
The Musical Movement
The movement is in very good working order, playing the tune at its correct speed. The music stops as it should, when the lid is closed or when the movement is fully unwound.
We have not been able to decipher the title of the tune.
Operating The Musical Movement
The movement is operated via the winding key on the bottom of the box. 5 turns of the key are sufficient to wind up the musical movement.
Notes About Vintage Locks And Musical Movements
As with all musical boxes, care should be taken not to over wind the key. Over winding will result in the movement malfunctioning.
We would like to make you aware that vintage locks and musical movements can suddenly malfunction at any time. They are already very old and will naturally have some wear from age and use.
We are not responsible for locks or movements that malfunction from further age and use, once boxes are purchased. Please ensure the lock and movement are working as soon as you receive your box.
You can view our full returns policy which includes locks and movements, by visiting our Payments And Returns page.
This wonderful box is in very good condition for its 85 years of age. It is structurally sound and has no nasty knocks or scratches.
All of the inlay is present and intact.
The exterior has minor age related wear.
There are some marks on the interior mirror, but it is smooth and has no chips or cracks.
There are some stains to the interior satin linings. This is as we'd expect with a genuine old box which has been loved and used for its purpose.
We do not recommend cleaning the satin as doing so could spoil its colour and cause damage.
The box may not make a suitable gift for those who would prefer a near perfect vintage box. Please take this into consideration before making your purchase.
