This is a beautiful Art Deco musical jewellery box, made in Italy in the 1930s. It has beautiful inlaid decoration and a streamlined design with curving sides. The box is complete with its original working lock and key.
The box stands raised on its original tapered resin feet, and its original song title label is on the bottom. The bottom of the box is also stamped MADE IN ITALY. This has faded.
About The Inlay
The box has an abundance of micro mosaic inlay, known as 'mosaic tesselated inlay'. This type of inlay is made up of 100s and 1000s of tiny pieces of wood, painstakingly put together to form intricate mosaic designs.
There is a large inlaid panel upon the lid which has a lovely tapestry like appearance. This has a beautiful inlaid frame. There are also inlaid panels and strips of inlay, on all four sides of the box. The checkered mosaic inlay is particularly attractive.
The interior has a single storage compartment and the musical movement is cased to the left of this. There is further shallow storage space upon the ledge of the casing.
The compartment and the ledge of the casing have their original padded and quilted satin panels.
The satin is a lovely powder blue shade. The interior walls are lined with the same satin.
The lid has its original piano 'stop' hinge which prevents it from falling back. It also has its original inset mirror which has beautiful beveled edges. This has a lovely inlaid frame around it.
The box is complete with its original working lock and key.
The Musical Movement
The movement plays the beautiful tune 'Ciribiribin'. This is an Italian melodic song, composed by Alberto Pestalozza in 1898, and with lyrics by Carlo Tiochet. It has since been performed by Frank Sinatra and Renata Carosone.
Operating The Musical Movement
The movement is operated via the winding key on the bottom of the box. 6 turns of the key are sufficient to wind up the musical movement. The movement is in good working order, playing the tune at its correct tempo. The music stops as it should, when the lid is closed or when the movement is fully unwound.
Notes About Locks And Musical Movements
As with all musical boxes, care should be taken not to over wind the key. Over winding will result in the movement malfunctioning.
We would like to make you aware that vintage locks and musical movements can suddenly malfunction at any time. They are already very old and will naturally have some wear from age and use. We are not responsible for locks or movements that malfunction from further age and use, once a box is purchased. Please ensure the lock and movement are working as soon as you receive your box.
You can view our full returns policy which includes locks and movements, by visiting our Payments And Returns page.
This wonderful box is in excellent condition for its 85 years of age. It is structurally sound and free of damage. All of the inlay is present and intact.
The exterior has minor age related wear, and the inlay on the lid has lifted ever so slightly. This is just along the edges of the strips within the panel. It is not very noticeable.
There are 2 marks behind the interior mirror. Apart from this the mirror is clear and has no chips or cracks.
There is some foxing/stains to the interior satin. This is as we'd expect in a genuine old box which has been loved and used for its purpose.
We do not recommend cleaning the satin as doing so could spoil its colour and cause damage.
In our opinion the above flaws do not spoil the beautiful overall appearance of the box, but add to its charm. It may not make a suitable gift for those who would prefer a near perfect vintage box. Please take the flaws into consideration before making your purchase.
Please use the following measurements to ensure the box is the right size for your requirements.
