This is a beautiful mid Victorian jewellery box, dating to 1860/1870. It has been partially restored and refurbished, and is complete with its original working lock.
The exterior has a beautiful Rosewood veneer which has a wonderful colour and superb figuration. It has a beautiful large inlaid Mother of Pearl feature to the lid, and a matching feature around the keyhole.
The Mother of Pearl is lovely with iridescent hues of pink, purple, blue and green. It shines beautifully when it catches the light.
The box is beautifully finished with pewter stringing to the lid and front.
The box is complete with its original brass lock and it comes with an older large Georgian bow key. This locks the box securely.
The box has its original brass 'stop' hinges which prevent the lid from falling back.
A new green felt covering has been added to the bottom to protect the surfaces of your furniture.
The inside of the lid has its original Satin panel which is beautifully gathered and pleated. It is a lovely shade of blue and has a beautiful Mother of Pearl and gold metal centre piece. The panel is surrounded by its original black leather covered frame. This is beautifully finished with embossed gold detail. The walls surrounding the frame have new teal blue paper linings.
The interior is complete with its original removable storage stray. This has 6 compartments of various shapes and sizes, all of which have been refurbished with new blue satin linings. The smaller compartments are an ideal size for rings, earrings, pendants and brooches. The larger compartments are ideal for bracelets, slim bangles and necklaces. The bottom of the tray has a new green felt covering.
Beneath the tray there is a further single compartment which is large and deep. This will hold a vast amount of jewellery, and is spacious enough to hold big pieces such as thick bangles, beads and watches. The base of this compartment has been refurbished with a new padded satin panel, and the interior walls have new teal blue paper linings.
All of the restoration and refurbishment on this box has been carried out by our skilled box restorer Jim. You can read about Jim and the work he does, by visiting our About Us page.
This wonderful box is in very good condition for its 120/130 years of age.
There are a few hairline age/stress cracks to the veneer which have been filled by our restorer, and there is a fine crack within the Mother of Pearl inlay on the lid. This has also been filled.
There are a couple of small splits/some fraying, within the pleated Satin panel on the inside of the lid.
