This is a superb high quality Italian jewellery box, made in the 1920s Art Deco period. It is made of solid Olive wood and is complete with its original working lock and key.
This box has an elongated octagonal shape and soft rounded edges to the lid. It is made of solid Olive wood, and this has superb figuration and colour. You can see some beautiful knots within the wood, and beautiful waves and formations that remind me of clouds. It is stunning! It is one of the most beautiful examples of Olive wood that I have seen in a long time.
Our box restorer has refinished this box by French polishing the Olive wood and by adding beautiful hand painted Swallows. The Swallows are completely his own artistry and are unique to this box. You will not see this exact decoration on any other box. The Swallows have a protective varnished covering.
The box is complete with its original working lock and period replacement key. It is also complete with its original quality 'stop' hinge. This prevents the lid from falling back.

Notes About Vintage Locks
We would like to make you aware that vintage locks can suddenly malfunction at any time.
They are already very old and will naturally have some wear from age and use. We are not responsible for locks that malfunction from further age and use, once boxes are purchased.
Please ensure the lock is working as soon as you receive your box.
You can view our full returns policy which includes locks, by visiting our Payments And Returns page.
The swallow represents the safe journey home of a loved one.
The interior has a spacious, single storage compartment. This as well as the inside of the lid, have their original red satin linings and padded panels.
About Olive Wood
Olive wood has a distinctive grain and rich colour which gives it a beautiful appearance. It has characteristic brown and yellow streaks which make for a beautiful contrast. These features make it a sought after wood for decorative items such as jewellery boxes.
Olive wood is also favoured for its hardness. It is a strong durable wood with a fairly high density, and it takes well to cutting and polishing.
The Olive tree primarily grows in the coastal regions of the Mediterranean. Its wood has been used for many years by Italian box makers in particular. It is also a favoured wood in areas of the Holy Lands such as Jerusalem.
This wonderful box is in excellent condition for its 90 plus years of age. It is free from cracks and is structurally sound. There is one minor chip in the Olive wood, right at the bottom edge on the back of the box. This is in a very inconspicuous area and is barely noticeable. It cannot be seen from the front of the box at all.
The interior satin is in very good condition with only minor fraying and a few minor light stains, consistent with age and use. There is minor rippling to the padded panel in the compartment.
There are some light scratches on the bottom of the box from friction.
The lock is in very good working order.
The painted Swallows, being newly applied, are in excellent order. Please note that they have intentionally been painted to appear old.
Please use the following measurements to ensure the box is the right size for your requirements.
21.6 by 15.3cm with a 3.5cm depth.
