This is a fabulous antique French jewellery box, dating to the reign of Napoleon III. It has been renovated and refurbished by our skilled box restorer and is complete with its original working lock and key.
The exterior is veneered with a beautiful variety of exotic Amboyna Burl wood. This has superb figuration and a wonderful vibrant colour.
The edges of the box have dark ebonised mouldings which highlight the beautiful colour of the veneer.
There is a very large, moulded, bas relief plaque to the lid, which is probably made of Vulcanite.
There is a lovely brass escutcheon to the keyhole and the box is complete with its original hinges (left and right) and lock. These are superb high quality hinges with beautiful engraved decoration.
The Exterior Renovation
Our restorer has replaced some of the ebonised edges as a proportion of these were missing. He has also made new feet for the box, in the exact design of the originals which were worn.
The central hinge was added by our restorer to keep the lid in an upright position. The lock keep in the lid is a replacement.
The Amboyna Burl wood veneer has been cleaned and beautifully refinished with French polish.
About Amboyna Burl Wood
Amboyna Burl is an exotic wood from the Pterocarpus Indicus genus. Its name derived from Amboyna Island, one of the places the tree can be found. The tree and wood is sometimes referred to as 'Narra' but in Burl form it is known as Amboyna. This wood was much favoured by French box and cabinet makers because of its beautiful appearance.
The interior has been beautifully refurbished by our skilled box restorer. It has a new hardwood storage tray with multiple compartments and this is seated above the original base compartment. The tray has been beautifully French polished and has gilt decoration to the edges.
The inside of the lid and large base compartment have new padded blue satin panels. The walls of the base compartment have new quality paper linings.
The compartments in the tray have new blue satin linings and the base of the tray has a new felt covering. There are new silk pull tabs to the top of the tray which enable you to lift it out with ease.
