This is a beautiful vintage musical jewellery box, made in Sorrento, Italy. It dates to the 1970s/80s and is still in wonderful condition.
The exterior is made of a variety of burl wood and has a beautiful turquoise enameled finish.
This is quiet rare on an Italian Sorrento box.
The lid has decorative inlay made of several varieties of wood, and a beautiful Mahogany veneered frame.
The inlay features a mandolin, a musical score sheet, and leafy flowers.
The enamel is vitreous and has a lovely shimmer.
All of the exterior has a high polished finish and a protective varnish. It has a beautiful sheen and is very smooth.
The box is complete with its original gold metal piano hinge. This is a quality stop hinge which prevents the lid from falling back.
The box stands raised on its original gold metal bun feet.
The bottom of the box has retained its original song title and manufacturers labels. The box is hand made as stated on the manufacturers label.
The interior has a beautiful Mahogany veneer which matches the frame on the lid. It has a single storage compartment on the left, and the musical movement is cased to the right. There is shallow storage space upon the ledge of the casing.
The compartment and casing have soft brushed felt linings. These are a lovely dark chocolate brown shade and they compliment the warm Mahogany veneer.
The veneer has a high polished glossy finish and a protective varnish.
The Musical Movement
The movement plays the beautiful Italian tune 'Torna a Surriento' (Torna a Sorrento). The English translation of this is 'Come Back To Sorrento'. It is a beautiful Neapolitan song which was composed in 1902 by Ernesto De Curtis. The song has since been sung by numerous performers such as Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and each of the three tenors, to name just a few!
The movement is in perfect working order and plays the tune at its correct speed. The music stops as it should, when the movement is unwound or when the lid is closed.
Operating The Musical Movement
The movement is operated via the winding key on the bottom of the box. Five turns of the key are required to fully wind the movement.
