This is a beautiful French antique jewellery box. It dates to the reign of Napoleon III, circa 1850.
The exterior has an exotic Amboyna Burl wood veneer. The centre of the lid has superb decorative inlay, consisting of Kingwood, Black Walnut and Brass, and its edges are veneered with Kingwood. There is a lovely flush inset brass escutcheon to the keyhole.
The box is complete with its original brass stop hinges which prevent the lid from falling back.
It is also complete with its original brass lock. This is a quality French lock which has a 'two turn' locking mechanism. There is a key with this box which is a period replacement.
The bottom of the box has a new felt covering which will protect the surfaces of your furniture.
Please note the lock is occasionally temperamental and can be fiddly to lock/unlock. Please see the notes on antique locks below.
About Amboyna Burl Wood
Amboyna Burl is an exotic wood from the Pterocarpus Indicus genus. Its name derived from Amboyna Island, one of the places the tree can be found. The tree and wood is sometimes referred to as 'Narra' but in Burl form is known as Amboyna. This wood was much favoured by French box and cabinet makers because of its beautiful appearance.
The interior has a single storage compartment. Its base has its original lightly padded satin panel and its walls have their original satin linings.
The inside of the lid has its original satin panel which is deeply padded and buttoned. Its walls have their original satin linings.
The satin is a beautiful shade of red.
This wonderful box is in lovely condition for its 160 plus years of age. It is structurally sound and its veneer is intact. There is minor wear to the veneer from age and handling.
The inlay to the lid is present and intact and the hinges are in good working order.
The interior satin is still in excellent clean condition with no splits. It has only minor superficial wear.
