This is a beautiful, high quality, vintage musical jewellery box. It was made in Sorrento in Italy, and it dates to the 1980s. It is a wonderful little box for a small collection of jewellery.
This box has a beautiful Marblewood veneer and very pretty inlay on the lid.
The inlay is made from several varieties of wood and features a mandolin, a musical score sheet, and leaves.
There is a lovely Mahogany veneered frame to the lid.
The box is complete with its original gold metal piano hinge. This is a quality stop hinge which prevents the lid from falling back.
The box stands raised on its original gold metal bun feet.
The bottom of the box has retained its original song title label, and the box comes with its original manufacturers certificate of guarantee.
Marblewood, also known as Serpentwood, is an exotic wood with distinctive patterning. It can be polished to a beautiful high lustre but is dense and heavy and therefore difficult to work. For this reason Marblewood is seldom used for boxes, and so boxes such as this one are rare.
The interior has a beautiful Mahogany veneer to match the frame on the lid. It has a single small storage compartment on the left, and the musical movement is cased to the right of this. There is further shallow storage space upon the ledge of the casing.
The compartment and casing have soft brushed felt linings. The felt is a lovely chocolate brown shade which compliments the warm Mahogany veneer.
The Musical Movement
The movement plays the beautiful Italian tune 'Torna a Sorriento' (Torna a Sorrento). The English translation of this is 'Come Back To Sorrento'. It is a beautiful Neapolitan song which was composed in 1902 by Ernesto De Curtis. The song has since been sung by numerous performers such as Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and each of the three tenors, to name just a few!
The movement is in perfect working order and plays the tune at its correct speed. The music stops as it should, when the movement is unwound or when the lid is closed.
Operating The Musical Movement
The movement is operated via the winding key on the bottom of the box. Seven turns of the key are required to fully wind the movement.
Notes On Vintage Musical Movements
Care must be taken not to overwind the movement. Over winding will result in the movement malfunctioning.
Vintage movements are already old and so will naturally have some wear from age and use. They may occasionally malfunction or deteriorate over time.
We are not responsible for movements that may deteriorate or malfunction from further age and use once a box is purchased. Neither are we responsible for movements that malfunction from overwinding.
Please ensure the movement is still working as soon as you receive your box. It will be checked again prior to posting.
You can view our full returns policy which includes musical movements and locks, by visiting our Payments And Returns page.
This beautiful box is in lovely condition with only minor light age related wear. It is structurally sound and has no damage.
The interior linings are excellent with no splits or fraying. They have minor marks from jewellery storage.
The musical movement is in perfect working order as stated above.
