This is a beautiful high quality musical jewellery box, dating to the 1970s. It was made in Sorrento, in Southern Italy, and is a lovely large example of its type.
This box has a beautiful burl Maple veneer and stunning floral inlay to the lid. The lid also has a Mahogany veneered frame, plus inlaid Ebony stringing.
All of the wood has been polished and varnished and hence has a wonderful smooth glossy finish. The inlay consists of several varieties of wood.
The box is complete with its original long piano hinge. This is a quality 'stop' hinge which prevents the lid from falling back.
The box has a beautiful curved design and stands raised on its original tapered feet. The bottom of the box has retained its original song title and manufacturers labels. Details of the manufacturer are given further down this page.
The box is complete with its original lock and pretty decorative key.
The lock is temperamental. Please see the notes on this in the bottom paragraph of the condition description below.
The interior has a single storage compartment. The musical movement is cased to the right of this and has shallow storage space upon its ledge. The compartment and casing have soft brushed felt linings which are a lovely crimson red shade.
The inside of the lid has a beautiful Mahogany veneer which matches the frame on the outside.
The Musical Movement
The movement is in perfect working order and plays the beautiful Italian tune 'Come back to Sorrento'. 'Torna a Surriento' (the original Italian title of this song), is a beautiful Neapolitan song which was composed in 1902 by Ernesto De Curtis. The song has since been sung by numerous performers such as Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and each of the three tenors, to name just a few!
Operating The Musical Movement
The movement is operated via the winding key on the bottom of the box. 7 turns of the key are sufficient to fully wind up the movement. The music stops as it should, when the lid is closed, or when the movement is fully unwound.
Notes On Vintage Musical Movements
As with all musical boxes, care should be taken not to over wind the movement. Over winding will result in the movement malfunctioning. We are not responsible for movements that are over wound or for movements which deteriorate from further age and use, once the box is purchased.
Please read our returns policy which includes our policy on musical movements.
This beautiful box was manufactured by the 'Inlaid Wood Works' factory in Sorrento, Italy. This manufacturer is renowned for its high quality inlaid goods, such as jewellery boxes, furniture, photo frames and clocks. This jewellery box is a vintage retired design of theirs.
This box is in excellent vintage condition with very little wear. All of the inlay is present and intact, and the box is of sound structure.
The hinge is in perfect working order, as is the musical movement.
There are some pen marks on the felt linings of the interior compartment. These are not horrendously unsightly but are being pointed out. The linings are neatly fitted and have no splits or fraying.
The lock is temparamental and does not always catch when the key is turned. It locks randomly.
Please take this into consideration before purchasing the box, as the lock and key are often purely decorative.
