This is a wonderful vintage rustic box, with a decorative and chunky book shaped design. It dates to the mid 20th century and is useful for storage of jewellery, trinkets, photos or letters etc.
This box is made of solid wood and has a decorative embossed leather panel on its lid.
The leather has a detailed countryside scene featuring windmills and riders upon a horse and a mule. The panel is secured with copper studding.
The wood has a fabulous ridged texture and lovely figuration. It has painted gold detail to the lid, front, and 'spine'.
The lid has large metal hinges, fixed with decorative shaped and engraved studs.
We've seen similar boxes which were made in France, though the scene upon the leather suggests this box is of Dutch origin.
The interior has a single unlined storage compartment.
This unusual box is in very good condition for its 50-60 years of age. It is of sound structure and has no damage. There is minor age related wear to the wood.
There is a minor raised ripple to the leather panel, to the left of the first windmill. This is a manufacturing fault and not damage.
The hinges squeak when the lid is raised and lowered.
Please use the following measurements to ensure the box is the right size for your requirements.
