This is a beautiful vintage musical jewellery box. It was made in Sorrento, Italy, and it dates to the 1970s/80s.
The exterior has a beautiful turquoise enameled finish which is rare on an Italian Sorrento box. The lid has beautiful inlaid decoration and a beautiful Mahogany veneered frame. The inlay is made from several varieties of wood. It is extremely decorative and features a mandolin, oboes, a scrolled musical score sheet, and leafy flowers. The enamel is vitreous and has a lovely shimmer.
The entire exterior has a smooth and glossy, polished and varnished finish.
The box is complete with its original gold metal piano hinge. This is a quality stop hinge which prevents the lid from falling back.
The box stands raised on its original gold metal bun feet.
The bottom of the box has retained its original song title label.
The interior has a beautiful Mahogany veneer to match the frame on the lid. It has a single small storage compartment on the left, and the musical movement is cased to the right. There is shallow storage space upon the ledge of the casing.
The compartment and casing have soft brushed felt linings. These are a lovely chocolate brown shade and they compliment the warm Mahogany veneer.
The Musical Movement
The movement plays the beautiful Italian tune 'Torna a Surriento' (Torna a Sorrento). The English translation of this is 'Come Back To Sorrento'. It is a beautiful Neapolitan song which was composed in 1902 by Ernesto De Curtis. The song has since been sung by numerous performers such as Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and each of the three tenors, to name just a few!
The movement is in perfect working order and plays the tune at its correct speed. The music stops as it should, when the movement is unwound or when the lid is closed.
Operating The Musical Movement
The movement is operated via the winding key on the bottom of the box. Eight turns of the key are required to fully wind the movement.
Notes On Vintage Musical Movements

Please check the movement is operating correctly as soon as you receive the box.
