This is a beautiful large Victorian box, dating to 1890/1900. It was designed to store both jewellery and sewing items, and is in lovely original condition.
This box has a beautiful Walnut veneer and large Rosewood panels to the front and its lid. There are decorative frames around both panels, and decorative banding along all four sides of the lid and both sides to the front of the box. The frames and banding have a beautiful diamond pattern and are made up of Ebony and Satinwood inlay. The lid also boasts a large inlaid diamond, made up of Satinwood, Ebony and Mahogany.
There is a lovely Mother of Pearl escutcheon to the keyhole, and the sides of the lid and the front of the box have beautifully shaped, canted edges.
The box is complete with its original brass lock and its original brass stop hinges. These prevent the lid from extending too far back. The lock is fully functional and is complete with its key.
The bottom of the box has its original covering.
The interior is completely original. It has a very roomy large deep compartment with two separate storage pouches to the left and right at the rear. The compartment and its pouches have lovely two tone cream and green silk linings. The linings to the inner walls are beautifully ruched, and the panel to the base of the compartment is padded and decoratively quilted. The pouches are loosely gathered.
The inside of the lid is lined in a similar fashion and with the same silk. Its panel is also padded and quilted and has lovely layered silk ribbons running diagonally across it. There are loops on the top ribbon which were designed to hold threads and sewing implements, and the quilting was designed to hold needles and pins.
This wonderful box is in great condition for its 110/120 years of age. It is solidly built and structurally sound.
The exterior has minor wear/minor light scratches here and there. There are a few small pieces of veneer missing to the back of the box, just along the bottom edge. These are in inconspicuous areas to the back and so are not overly noticeable. Please see the last two images above. There is minor wear to the veneer along the front edge of lid, just behind the banding. This is not damage, its just expected wear from handling.
The interior silk linings are lovely for their age, just some small pin prick holes and a small little scrape to the cream silk inside the lid. These little marks are from pins and needles. There is a little amount of fraying to the silk along the top edge of the compartment, on the left hand side above the pouch. These minor flaws are as we'd expect from a box that has been loved and used for its purpose.
The cover to the bottom of the box is worn around the edges. Most of it is present and intact and so we've left it in place as its a lovely original feature.
The lock and hinges are in full working order.
