This is a beautiful antique jewellery box, dating to 1870/1880. It is complete with its original working lock and key.
The box has a beautiful Walnut veneer and wonderful wide bands of 'Berlin Strapwork' inlay. This is a very lovely type of inlay consisting of several varieties of hardwoods.
The box boasts a wonderful domed lid which is complete with its original solid Mahogany panel on the inside. It is also complete with its original solid brass lock and stop hinges. These prevent the lid from extending too far back.
The box is also complete with its original large 'bow' shaped key which locks it securely. There is a lovely brass escutcheon to the keyhole, set flush within the veneer.
The Walnut veneer has a beautiful rich colour and lovely figuration.
The bottom of the box has a hessian covering which will protect the surfaces of your furniture. This has age related wear around the edges, but the majority of it is still present. It is a lovely original feature of the box.
The interior has been beautifully refurbished by our wonderful skilled box restorer. The top of the interior has a brand new hardwood tray which has been beautifully French polished and stained. The tray has a new padded cream satin panel, and cream satin linings to the interior walls. It also has lovely cream silk pull tabs.
There is further storage space beneath the tray, in the compartment in the base of the box. This too has a new padded cream satin panel, and new patterned cream paper linings to the walls. This compartment is fairly deep and roomy.
The base of the tray has a new felt covering.

This box started life as an expensive tea caddy and is a wonderful piece of social history! It has now been lovingly converted into a beautiful and very functional jewellery box.
This beautiful box is in excellent condition. It is very sturdy and of solid construction. The veneer has some minor age related wear as we'd expect for its 130/140 years of age.
