This is a wonderful large antique jewellery box, dating to 1870/1880. It is complete with its original working lock and key.
This box has a beautiful Walnut veneer with a Mother of Pearl inlaid cartouche to the lid, and a matching Mother of Pearl inlaid escutcheon to the keyhole. It is complete with its original brass lock and also its original brass stop hinges. These prevent the lid from falling right back. The key is also original and locks the box securely.
The bottom of the box is complete with its original hessian covering.
The interior has been fully refurbished and is in keeping with its original. It has a new French polished hardwood tray with a large compartment to the front and 3 smaller compartments to the rear. The front compartment is very spacious and the ideal shape and size for laying out necklaces and chains. The rear compartments are perfect for small pieces of jewellery such as rings, pendants, earrings and brooches. There is a single large compartment beneath the tray which will hold much larger pieces of jewellery such as bangles, beads and watches.
There are beautiful new, padded blue satin panels, to all of the compartments plus the inside of the lid. The inside walls of the tray are lined with the same satin. The interior walls of the large base compartment are newly lined with blue paper.
The tray has blue silk pull tabs.
All of the above refurbishments have been carried out by our trusted, skilled box restorer.
Our Jewellery Box Restorer
You can read about Jim, our wonderful box restorer, by visiting our About Us page.
This wonderful box is in excellent condition for its 135/145 years of age.
The interior linings, being new, are in pristine condition, and the lock is fully functional.
There is minor wear to the Walnut veneer and some patches of wear to the hessian cover on the bottom of the box. This is as we'd expect on a box of this age which has been loved and used for its purpose.
There is a small chip to the Mother of Pearl escutcheon around the keyhole. This is not overly visible and isn't unsightly in our opinion. It is merely light damage from where the key has been inserted, however many hundreds of times!
The box is structurally sound and sturdy.
