This is a beautiful vintage musical jewellery box, dating to the 1950s/60s. It was made in Japan and has its original Japanese musical movement.
The musical movement plays the beautiful main theme tune for 'Swan Lake', composed by Tchaikovsky in 1876.
The box has a glossy lacquered finish in various shades of red. It is beautifully decorated to the lid and all four sides, with Japanese landscapes which include Mount Fuji, temples, and a lake scene on the back. The lid and front are further decorated with iridescent Abalone shell inlay. This adds a beautiful shimmer to the box!
There is a very pretty engraved escutcheon to the keyhole, and the box is complete with its original hinges and key.
The lock of the box is original but not functioning. The lock and key are therefore purely decorative.
The interior has a lift up storage tray, which automatically rises when you open the lid. The tray has a single storage compartment, and a lacquered finish/hand painted scenes, to compliment the exterior decoration. The tray rises smoothly with its original white metal cantilever hinges.
Beneath the tray is a further single compartment and the musical movement is cased to the right of this. This has a lovely black lacquered cover. In front of the casing is a little ring storage section.
There is a wonderful fitted mirror to the inside of the lid which has hand painted decoration. This features a beautiful Geisha girl in traditional Japanese clothing, holding a parasol.
All of the compartments, and the walls to the inside of the lid, are beautifully lined with a ribbed cord fabric. The lids of the storage tray have their original silk tassels.
This is a rarer example of a Japanese lacquered box. Most of this type are finished with black lacquer and do not have decoration on the interior mirror. These beautiful finishes make the box that extra bit special!
This beautiful box was manufactured by the Japanese firm 'Golden Dragon'. The firms name and logo are stamped on the bottom of the box.
Operating the musical movement
The music is operated via a wind up key on the base of the box. 4 turns of the key are sufficient to play the tune in full. The music stops as it should, when the lid is closed, or when the movement is fully unwound.
As with all musical boxes, care should be taken not to over wind the key.
This wonderful box is in excellent condition for its 55/65 years of age. It is structurally sound and free of damage. As noted earlier the lock is not functional.
There is one small blemish to the lacquer on the lid, near to the top right corner. This is a manufacturing blemish and not damage. Other than this there is some minor light age related wear here and there to the lacquer.
There is a small amount of blue paint missing to the Geisha girl on the interior mirror. The rest of the decoration to the mirror is lovely, and the colours of the paint are still nice and vibrant.
The little flaws noted above are minor and do not spoil the overall appearance of the box. The wear is as we'd expect for the age.
The lacquer still has a beautiful sheen which is wonderful as this often dulls on these boxes.
The interior linings are in beautiful condition. They are neatly fitted and have no splits or fraying.
The musical movement is currently in good working order and plays the tune at its correct speed. Its cover lifts off easily should it ever require attention in the future.
Please note that vintage musical movements can deteriorate over time. We are not responsible for those that wear or malfunction after further age and use once purchased.
