This is a beautiful Italian Art Deco jewellery box, made in the 1930s. It is made of solid Olive wood and is complete with its original key. We have provided some information on Olive wood further down in the description. The exterior The lid has beautiful hand painted swallows, plus lovely raised foliate inlay across the right hand corner. This is beautifully bordered by a band of tesselated mosaic inlay. The front side of the lid has a beautiful flowing curved form. The swallows are in beautiful flight position. The box is complete with its original lock and stop hinges. These prevent the lid from falling back. There are beautiful dovetail joints to both the box and its interior swing compartments. Swallow Symbolism The swallows on this box were most likely added as a form of symbolism. The swallow represents the safe journey home of a loved one. The interior The interior has two swing opening compartments, and a further larger compartment beneath. The compartments have been beautifully relined by our wonderful skilled box restorer, and now have new padded turquoise silk panels. There is also a new oval Mahogany wood panel, to the inside of the lid. This has been detailed with a beautiful hand painted swallow to compliment those on the exterior. The panel has been added to replace a damaged mirror, and has been manufactured and hand painted by our restorer. It is completely unique to this box! The base of the box has its original felt covering. About Olive Wood Olive wood has a distinctive grain and rich colour which gives it a beautiful appearance. It has characteristic brown and yellow streaks which make for a beautiful contrast. These features make it a sought after wood for decorative items such as jewellery boxes. Olive wood is also favoured for its hardness. It is a strong durable wood with a fairly high density, and takes well to cutting and polishing. The olive tree primarily grows in the coastal regions of the Mediterranean. Its wood has been used for many years by Italian box makers in particular. It is also a favoured wood in areas of the Holy Lands such as Jerusalem. Condition This wonderful box is in excellent condition for its 80 plus years of age. All of the inlay is present and intact, and the box is structurally sound. The interior linings, being new, are in excellent condition! There are a few light scratches on the back of the box which are in no way unsightly. The front left foot of the box has suffered a little knock and has a small slither of wood missing. This is not very noticeable and does not affect the structure of the box. Measurements Please use the following measurements to ensure the box is the right size for your requirements.
