This is a vintage musical jewellery box, dating to the 1960s/70s. It plays the very beautiful 'Edelweiss' tune, from the 1959 Rodgers & Hammerstein musical 'The Sound of Music'.
The lid of the box is beautifully inlaid with several varieties of wood. These have created a beautiful picture of flowers and foliage, musical instruments, and a musical score. There is a lovely mandolin and guitar with beautiful string detail, and the mandolin is adorned with a pretty bow. The inlay of the bow has been stained a lovely teal green shade.
There is an inlaid gold metal escutcheon to the keyhole, and the box is complete with its original key. It has a lovely long, piano stop hinge, which prevents the lid from falling back.
The interior has a single compartment, lined with beautiful deep red velvet. The musical movement is to the right of the compartment, nicely cased and covered with velvet. There is enough space above this for placing little pieces of jewellery such as rings and hoop/stud earrings. The compartment is big enough and deep enough for bangles, watches, necklaces and bracelets.
The box is made of mahogany wood (the dark wood visible to the inside lid, sides of the lid, and around the inner compartment). The rest of the box is beautifully veneered with another variety of wood. This has been stained a warm peach colour. All of the wood has a protective glossy varnish.
The box stands raised on nicely shaped, black resin feet.
Operating the musical movement
4 turns of the key on the base of the box, are sufficient to wind up the musical movement. The music stops as it should, when the lid is closed, or when the movement is fully unwound.
As with all musical boxes, care should be taken not to over wind the key.
The casing to the movement can easily be removed, should the movement ever require attention. It is presently in very good working order, with the music playing at the correct speed.
This wonderful box is in lovely condition for its 40 to 50 years of age. There are some superficial fine lines in the varnish, and a few teeny scratches where you can see the natural wood beneath the stain. These are extremely minor flaws and in no way spoil the beautiful overall appearance of the box.
The velvet linings are in beautiful condition, and all of the inlay is present and intact.
