Beautiful vintage Anglo Indian jewellery box. Superb carved Sandalwood panels and intricate miniature mosaic inlay. Original linings to the interior. Working lock and key.

This is a vintage Anglo Indian jewellery box dating to the 1950s.
The Exterior
This box is made of Sandalwood and has both beautiful inlay and carved decoration.
There is a superb hand carved Sandalwood panel on the lid and further carved Sandalwood panels to the sides. The panel to lid features the Taj Mahal and a tower, surrounded by beautiful frames and leafy vines. The panels on the sides also feature leafy vines. There is a vast amount of intricate detail to all of these beautiful panels.
There is also miniature mosaic inlay to the lid and sides of the box. This intricate mosaic inlay decoration is known as 'Sadeli'. Each little piece of the mosaic inlay is painstakingly positioned by hand. The inlay consists of Mother of Pearl and Rosewood.
There are also Rosewood veneers to the box plus inlaid bone stringing and bone edges.
As you can see there is an abundance of high-quality workmanship on this box.
The bottom of the box has a new cushioned felt covering. This will protect the surfaces of furniture.
The box has its original 'stop' hinges which hold the lid upright. It also has its original working lock and key.
The Interior
The interior has a single storage compartment. The compartment and the inside of the lid have their original purple brushed linings.
Condition
This box is in very fair condition for its age. All of the mosaic inlay is still present and there is no damage to the Sandalwood panels. The carving on these is still beautifully crisp.
The interior linings have minor wear and that to the inside of the lid has faded.
There is a piece of wood missing to the back wall of the compartment. This has not affected the sound structure of the box.
There is some movement to the left hinge but the lid still closes as it should. There is a pin in each hinge that has lost its head. We have not replaced these as doing so could cause damage.
There is slight movement/stiffness to the lock but it still locks securely.

We are not responsible for locks that malfunction from further age and use once boxes are purchased. The lock will be checked again prior to shipping.
