Vintage Spanish Inlaid Musical Jewellery Box

This is a vintage Spanish musical jewellery box, made in the 1950s/60s. Its design is inspired by the Spanish Alhambra palace and it is extremely decorative with its abundance of mosaic inlay!

There is a description about the inlay further down this page.

The Exterior

This box has beautiful mosaic marquetry inlay, made up of bone and several varieties of wood. It has resin pillared arches at all four corners and a decorative resin escutcheon to the lock. The box has beautiful angles and stands raised on conical resin feet.

The box is musical and plays a pretty tune. We have not been able to decipher its title yet. Details of the musical movement are given further down.

The box is complete with its original working lock and key and also its original stop hinges. These prevent the lid from falling back.

About The Inlay

The marquetry inlay on this box is known as 'Taracea' in Spain. Taracea comes from the Arab word 'Tarci', meaning to encrust. This type of inlay has been produced Spain, in the city of Granada, since the 14th century. It is now practically the only place in Spain where it is still made. The art of Taracea is North African in origin and arrived in Spain with Moorish rule.

The Interior

The interior has a new hardwood storage tray, made by our skilled box restorer. Beneath this is a storage compartment that is original to the box. There are decorative raised corners in the storage compartment which are the tops of the pillared arches. These corners make up a very useful ledge and our restorer had the wonderful idea of making a tray to fit upon them.

The tray has two nicely partitioned compartments which have been lined with red paper. The tray is the only addition to this box, the rest is totally original. The tray adds further functionality and decoration but can be removed if so desired.

The original compartment and the inside of the lid have maroon felt linings.

Operating The Musical Movement

The musical movement is operated via the wind up key on the bottom of the box.  Five turns of the key are sufficient to fully wind up the movement. The music stops as it should, when the lid is closed, or when the movement has fully unwound. The movement is in perfect condition and plays the tune at its correct speed.

As with all musical boxes, care should be taken not to overwind the movement. Over winding will result in the movement malfunctioning.

Notes About Vintage Locks And Musical Movements

We would like to make you aware that vintage locks and musical movements can suddenly malfunction at any time. They are already very old and so will naturally have some wear from age and use. We are not responsible for locks or movements that malfunction from further age and use once boxes are purchased.

You can view our full returns policy which includes locks and movements, by visiting our Payments And Returns page.

Condition

This beautiful box is in very good condition for its 50/60 years of age. All of the inlay is present and intact and has very little wear. There are a few pieces of resin missing to the pillared arches but these are not overly noticeable. The interior felt linings are in good clean condition with only minor light wear from age and use.
