This is a beautiful vintage musical jewellery box. It was made in Sorrento, Italy, and it dates to the 1940s. It is complete with its original working lock and key.
The Exterior
This box has Walnut and Mahogany veneers. The centre of the lid has a large marquetry inlaid scene which features mythological winged creatures and scrolling leafy vines. This is surrounded by a frame of beautiful micro mosaic inlay, and there is also mosaic inlay to the front and back of the box. This type of mosaic inlay is known as 'Tesselation' and a description of this can be found below. There are beautiful flowers and chequered patterns within the inlay.
The box is complete with its original lock and key, and original brass piano hinge. This is a quality stop hinge which prevents the lid from falling back.
The box stands raised on nicely turned conical feet. These are also original.
The bottom of the box has retained its original song title label.
Mosaic Tesselation Inlay
This type of inlay is skillfully created with hundreds of tiny pieces of wood. It is painstakingly put together over many, many hours, to form a beautiful mosaic pattern. Several varieties of wood are used, to add colour and dimension to the mosaic.
The Interior
The interior has a single storage compartment and the musical movement is cased to the right of this. There is further shallow storage space upon the ledge of the movements casing.
The base of the compartment, and ledge of the casing, have their original thick quilted satin panels. The interior walls have their original satin linings. The satin is a lovely powder blue shade.
The inside of the lid has its original inset oval mirror. There is an inlaid satin wood frame around the mirror with fine painted detail.

The Musical Movement
The movement plays the beautiful Italian tune 'Torna a Surriento' (Torna a Sorrento). The English translation of this is 'Come Back To Sorrento'. It is a beautiful Neapolitan song which was composed in 1902 by Ernesto De Curtis. The song has since been sung by numerous performers such as Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and each of the three tenors, to name just a few!
The movement is in perfect working order and plays the tune at its correct speed. The music stops as it should, when the movement is unwound or when the lid is closed.
Operating The Musical Movement
The movement is operated via the winding key on the bottom of the box. 5 turns of the key are sufficient to fully wind up the movement. The music stops as it should, when the lid is closed, or when the movement is fully unwound.
Notes On Vintage Musical Movements
As with all musical boxes, care should be taken not to over wind the movement. Over winding will result in the movement malfunctioning. We are not responsible for movements that are over wound or for movements which deteriorate from further age and use, once boxes are purchased.

Condition
This wonderful box is in good condition for its 70 plus years of age. All of the inlay is present and intact, and the box is structurally sound. There is minor fading/minor wear to the veneers.
The interior satin is free from splits and fraying. Being original and very old, it does have some foxing/stains. The interior mirror, also being old, has some cloudiness. You can still see your reflection in it and it is free from chips and cracks.
