This is a beautiful vintage musical jewellery box, made in Japan in the 1960s. It comes complete with its original working lock and key.

The Exterior

The box has a beautiful Grand Piano design and a glossy red and black lacquered finish. It is beautifully decorated with hand-painted Japanese landscape scenes which include Mount Fuji and temples. The lid and front are further decorated with iridescent Abalone shell inlay. This adds a beautiful shimmer to the box!

There is a pretty engraved metal escutcheon to the keyhole and the box is complete with its original working lock and key.

The box stands raised on its original tapered feet and has its original white metal 'piano' hinges. These hold the lid upright.

The Interior

The interior has two storage compartments and a revolving resin ballerina. It is lined with a durable ribbed cord fabric which has a colourful cerise pink shade.

The inside of the lid has angled mirror panels, with silky gold braid trim on either side.

The Ballerina has a painted gold bustier corset and a white net skirt. She starts revolving when the musical movement is wound.

The Musical Movement

The movement plays a sweet joyful tune. We have not been able to decipher the tune but please feel free to ring us if you'd like to hear it before purchasing the box.

Operating The Musical Movement

The movement is operated via the winding key on the bottom of the box. 3 turns of the key are required to play the tune in full.

The movement is in perfect working order, playing the tune at its correct tempo. The music stops as it should, when the lid is closed or when the movement is fully unwound.

Notes On Vintage Musical Movements

Care must be taken not to overwind the movement. Over winding will result in the movement malfunctioning.

Vintage movements are already old and so will naturally have some wear from age and use. They may occasionally malfunction or deteriorate over time.

We are not responsible for movements that may deteriorate or malfunction from further age and use once a box is purchased. Neither are we responsible for movements that malfunction from overwinding.

Please ensure the movement is still working as soon as you receive your box. It will be checked again prior to posting.

You can view our full returns policy which includes musical movements and locks, by visiting our Payments And Returns page.

Condition

This box is in excellent vintage condition with very little wear despite its age. It has sound structure. There is minor light wear to the lacquered finish.

All of the paint and Abalone shell inlay is present and intact.

The lacquer still has a beautiful glossy sheen which is wonderful as this often dulls over time.

The interior linings are neatly fitted and have no splits or fraying. They have some minor light stains from previous use.

The mirrors have clouded over time as is often the case with these Japanese boxes. Please see the close-up photo provided.

The hinges and lock are in good working order.
