Beautiful Edwardian antique jewellery box with a lovely maroon leather finish.
This is a charming small antique jewellery box, dating to around 1910. It is complete with its original working lock and key.
The Exterior
This box has a textured maroon leather finish and a decorative white metal escutcheon to the lock. It is complete with its original white metal lock and also its original white metal stop hinges. These prevent the lid from falling back.
History
The bottom of the box has retained a label which shows the box was won in a newspaper competition. The name of the newspaper was 'Tit-Bits' and this was a weekly paper which included general articles, current affairs and show business gossip, etc. The paper was founded in 1881 by publisher George Newnes and was in publication right up to 1989.
The Interior
The interior has its original storage tray at the top, and a larger single compartment beneath. The tray has 3 storage compartments and a ring storage section at the back. The centre compartment has a circular ring that was originally designed to hold a pocket watch. This would now be useful for holding a pendant or locket.
The inside of the lid, the bottom of the large compartment and the side compartments of the tray, all have beautiful watered silk panels. The centre compartment and ring storage section of the tray, have brushed velvet coverings.
The exterior and inner walls of the storage tray and inner walls of the lid and base compartment are finished with the same leather as that on the exterior.
Condition
This box is in complete original condition and as such it does have some wear here and there. There are some marks/scratches to the leather but none that are very unsightly and some ink stains in the base compartment.
The box locks securely and the hinges are still in good working order.
The most predominate wear on this box is to the leather covering on the bottom, which obviously won't be seen unless the box is turned over.
