This is a beautiful Art Deco inlaid jewellery box. It was made in Italy in the 1920s, and is complete with its original key.
The Exterior
The box is made of solid Olive Wood. This has beautiful figuration, particularly on the inside of the lid. There is a description about Olive wood further down.
The lid has two beautiful inlaid swallows, made up of various hardwoods. The inlay work is of exceptional quality, being beautifully set and flush within the Olive Wood.
There is a beautiful French term of endearment, hand painted on the lid in lovely script. This reads 'Nous Reviendrons' which translates into English as 'We Will Return'. This ties in perfectly with the symbolism of the swallows, as we have detailed below.
Swallow Symbolism
The swallows on this box were most likely added as a form of symbolism. The swallow represents the safe journey home of a loved one.
The Interior
The interior has a single spacious compartment which has been beautifully refurbished by our wonderful skilled box restorer. It has a brand new padded teal satin panel, and teal satin linings to the walls.
The box is complete with its original lock and key, plus it original stop hinges which prevent the lid from falling back.
The Base
A new felt covering has been added to the base, to protect the surfaces of your furniture.
Condition
This wonderful box is in excellent condition for its 95 plus years of age. All of the inlay is present and intact, and the box is structurally sound.
The interior satin panel and linings are in excellent pristine condition, being new!
The lock is currently in good working order.
Note
We would like to make you aware that vintage locks can suddenly malfunction at any time.
They are already very old and will naturally have some wear from age and use. We are not responsible for locks that malfunction from further age and use, once the box is purchased.
About Olive Wood
Olive wood has a distinctive grain and rich colour which gives it a beautiful appearance. It has characteristic brown and yellow streaks which make for a beautiful contrast. These features make it a sought after wood for decorative items such as jewellery boxes.
Olive wood is also favoured for its hardness. It is a strong durable wood with a fairly high density, and takes well to cutting and polishing.
The Olive tree primarily grows in the coastal regions of the Mediterranean. Its wood has been used for many years by Italian box makers in particular. It is also a favoured wood in areas of the Holy Lands such as Jerusalem.
