This is a beautiful French antique jewellery box.  It dates to the reign of Napoleon III, circa 1860.

The Exterior

This box has a stunning Amboyna burl wood veneer.

The lid has superb decorative inlay, consisting of Kingwood, Ebony, Mother of Pearl and polished Brass.  It also has beautiful Kingwood banding plus Ebony and Bone stringing.

There is a lovely inset brass escutcheon to the keyhole, set flush into the wood.

The box is complete with its original brass stop hinges which prevent the lid from falling back.
It is also complete with its original brass lock and key.

The bottom of the box has a new felt covering which will protect the surfaces of furniture.  Apart from this the entire box is in its original state.

About Amboyna Burl Wood

Amboyna Burl is an exotic wood from the Pterocarpus Indicus genus.  Its name derived from Amboyna Island, one of the places the tree can be found.  The tree and wood is sometimes referred to as 'Narra' but in Burl form is known as Amboyna.  This wood was much favoured by French box and cabinet makers because of its beautiful appearance.

The Interior

The interior has a single large storage compartment.  This has its original quilted satin panel and satin linings.  The inside of the lid has the same.

The quilted satin is absolutely beautiful!  It is a gorgeous deep red colour and is deeply padded and buttoned.

Condition

This wonderful box is in excellent condition for its 150 plus years of age.  It is structurally sound and its veneer and inlay are intact.

There is a small section of the bone stringing missing on the right hand side of the lid.  This is not overly noticeable.  There is a small repair to the bottom back right corner of the box, again not very noticeable.  Other than this there is minor age related wear.

The interior satin is still in fabulous condition.  There is one small area of wear to this, in the front left corner of the compartment.  You can only see this if you look into the compartment from the back of the box.

The hinges are still in perfect working order and the box locks securely.
