Superb High Quality Antique Coromandel Jewellery Box

This is a superb high-quality Victorian box, dating to 1860/70. It is in complete original condition with the exception of a replacement lock.

The Exterior

The front and lid have rare Coromandel veneer and the back and sides have an ebonised veneer. The lid has an inset brass handle and plate which have beautiful floral engraving, and there is quality brass stringing both on the lid and to the front of the box. There is also a decorative, surface mounted, engraved brass escutcheon to the lock.

The box has its original quality brass 'stop' hinges, which prevent the lid from falling back.

The box is complete with its original bow style key. The lock is a replacement which our restorer added as the original was damaged.

The bottom of the box has a black leather covering. This will prevent the surfaces of your furniture from becoming scratched.

About Coromandel Wood

Coromandel is a valuable rare wood from South East Asia and Sri Lanka (Ceylon). Sadly, Coromandel has been logged to extinction over the last 2 to 3 hundred years. The Victorians loved Coromandel wood but it was so expensive that they often only used it on the lid and front of boxes, as in the case of this particular box. The use of Coromandel on a box and furniture is always a sign of quality. Coromandel wood was referred to in Dame Edith Sitwell's poem 'Black Mrs Behemoth', where its grain was likened to that of a 'rolling curling smoke of a blown-out candle'.

The Interior

The interior has a removable storage tray with several compartments and a ring storage section, plus a large single compartment beneath the tray. The centre front compartment has a circular ring which was originally designed to hold a pocket watch.

The inside of the lid, bottom of the large compartment, compartments and ring storage in the tray, all have beautiful blue silk panels/linings. The centre compartment in the tray has a brushed velvet lining which is a beautiful violet shade.

The exterior and inner walls of the storage tray, plus the inner walls of the base compartment, all have black vinyl coverings.

A small section behind the lock of the interior front wall is imperfect. This is due to the replacement of the lock. This area is not seen when the storage tray is in situ.

All of the interior linings/coverings are original and so too are the metal handles on the tray.

Condition

This box is in wonderful original untouched condition, apart from the replacement lock. Its interior linings are absolutely superb, free from stains and splits. There is minor light wear from use/handling to the black vinyl coverings in the interior.

The exterior Coromandel and ebonised veneers have minor superficial scratches. This is as we'd expect on a box of this age which has been loved and used.

The brass plate with handle and brass escutcheon are both securely seated,

All of the brass stringing is still present.

The box locks securely with its key and the hinges are in perfect working order.
