Fine French Mid 19th C Ebonised Jewellery Box

This is a fine French antique jewellery box with a lovely ebonised finish. It dates to the reign of Napoleon III, circa 1845/1850, and has been renovated and refurbished by our skilled box restorer.

The Exterior

This box has a lovely ebonised finish and gilt decoration along the edges of the lid.

There is a superb large decorative cartouche on the lid which has a scrolling foliate design. This is made of brass and is partially raised and partially inset flush into the wood. The centre of the cartouche has red enamel decoration. This looks beautiful against the brass and the colour stands out amongst the dark ebonised finish. The brass has beautiful engraved detail.

There is an inset brass banded frame to the lid with inset brass stringing around this, and a further inset brass banded frame to the front of the box. There is also a beautiful inset brass escutcheon to the keyhole. This is also beautifully engraved and has a foliate design to compliment the cartouche on the lid.

The box stands raised on its original ornamental cast solid brass feet. It has its original brass hinges and its original working lock and key.

The bottom of the box has retained its original retailer's label. Details of this are given below. Further printed information about the retailer will be sent along with the box.

The red enamel to the cartouche on the lid has been added by our box restorer.

The Interior

The interior has been beautifully refurbished by our skilled box restorer.

There are beautiful new raspberry red padded satin panels to both the base of the compartment and the inside of the lid.

The top interior wall to the inside of the lid, plus the interior walls of the compartment, have new raspberry red satin linings.

The other interior walls to the inside of the lid have stunning salmon pink pleated silk linings with scalloped gilt edging. There is beautiful salmon pink silk cord trim along the inside of these linings. These linings and cord trim are original materials of the box which our restorer was able to save and cleverly incorporate into the refurbishment.

The ribbon to the left-hand side prevents the lid from falling back.

The Retailer

This wonderful box was originally retailed by the French firm Papeterie Marion. This firm primarily sold luxury French goods, of which this box is a fine example. It was based in both Paris and Regent Street, London, during the 19th century.

Condition

This box is in very good condition for its 160 plus years of age.

There are a few minor small and fine hairline cracks which are not that obvious, and a little movement in the front left brass foot. The back right foot has a piece missing at the top, again not that obvious unless pointed out. Other than this are some little marks here and there. These small flaws are as we'd expect on a box of this age which has been loved and used for its purpose.

The interior is absolutely beautiful. The red satin linings, being new, are in excellent unused condition. The original materials to the inside of the lid are in lovely clean condition with no splits or fraying.

There are some scratches to the covering on the bottom of the box.

The hinges and lock are all in good working order.
