This is a beautiful antique jewellery box dating to around 1880. It comes from the Black Forest region and has superb carved decoration. The interior has been beautifully refurbished and the box has a working lock and key.

The Exterior

This box is made of solid Pine. It has ornate carved decoration on the lid and all 4 sides which features beautiful scrolling vines and Ivy leaves. The Pine has a beautiful dark stained finish and is coated with a glossy protective varnish.

The box has a beautiful flowing curved form and solid brass 'stop' hinges which hold the lid upright at 90 degrees. It also has its original working brass lock. The original key is missing but a new key has been fitted which locks the box securely. The lock is a quality French double lock. Please see below for further notes about this.

A beautiful violet tassel has been added to decorate the key. This compliments the linings in the interior.

The Interior

The interior has two swing opening compartments and a further larger compartment beneath these.

The entire interior has been fully refurbished by our skilled box restorer.

All three compartments have new padded satin panels in their bases.

The inside of the lid and inner walls of the top compartments have new satin linings.

The inner walls of the lower compartment have beautiful new paper linings. This is a quality patterned paper with a pastel lilac shade.

The satin is a stunning deep violet shade.

About The French Lock

This beautiful box has a wonderful French lock which was designed to deter thieves from stealing its contents. It was cleverly designed so that its key could be turned TWICE, to both lock and unlock the box. The idea was that an intruder would believe the lock to be faulty when it did not open upon just one turn of the key. The lock can, however, be operated with just one turn of the key if desired.

Notes About Antique Locks

We would like to make you aware that vintage locks can suddenly malfunction at any time. They are already very old and will naturally have some wear from age and use. We are not responsible for locks that malfunction from further age and use once boxes are purchased. Please ensure the lock is working as soon as you receive your box.
