Beautiful antique inlaid Walnut jewellery box which started life as an expensive tea caddy. Newly relined interior compartments.
This is a beautiful inlaid antique box which was originally an expensive Victorian tea caddy. Its interior compartments have been relined and can now be used to store jewellery and/or keepsakes.
The Exterior
This box has a beautiful Walnut veneer and decorative wide bands of 'Berlin Strapwork' inlay. This is a lovely type of inlay, consisting of several varieties of hardwoods.
The box has a very beautiful domed lid and is complete with its original solid brass lock. It is also complete with its original 'stop' hinges which hold the lid upright. There is also a lovely inset brass escutcheon to the keyhole.
The Walnut veneer has a beautiful warm colour and lovely figuration. It has recently had a new protective coat of varnish.
The bottom of the box has its original hessian covering. This has age-related wear around the edges but the majority of it is still present.
Note
There is no key with this box.
The Interior
The interior has two deep storage compartments which are complete with their original lids.
The compartments and the inside of the lids have new marbled plum coloured paper linings.
Date
Late Victorian. Circa 1870/1880.
Condition
This box is in very good condition for its 130/140 years of age. It is structurally sound and has no nasty cracks.
There is a small piece of inlay missing to the front of the box, and a small slither of veneer missing on the left side of the box. Both are at the very bottom of the box and so are not particularly noticeable. Please see images 9 and 10.
Some of the inlay on the lid has lifted slightly but only along the edges.
