This is a beautiful antique jewellery box with a high quality Bramah lock. It dates to 1890/1900 and is in complete original condition throughout.
The Exterior
This box has a beautiful Burgundy leather finish with a decorative embossed crosshatch pattern. It has a large solid brass handle and plate on the lid, and a solid brass raised escutcheon to the lock. There is lovely gilt banding to the leather on the lid, front, and back of the box.
The bottom of the box has a textured red leathercloth covering.
The box is complete with its original brass Bramah lock and its original brass stop hinges. These prevent the lid from falling back. Please note there is no key.
About Bramah Locks
A box fitted with a Bramah lock is an indicator of high quality. All antique locks manufactured by Bramah themselves, are stamped 'Bramah London', however not all Bramah patent locks were stamped in the same way. A few locksmiths, notably Sampson Morden & Co, manufactured Bramah patent locks, but Bramah made it clear that unless they were stamped Bramah they were not manufactured by themselves.
Joseph Bramah (13th April 1748 - 9th December 1814) who invented the lock, was born at Stainborough Lane Farm, Stainborough, Barnsley. He was an inventor and skilled locksmith who was best known for inventing the hydraulic press. Bramah designed this lock of his own and received a patent for it in 1784. In the same year he started the Bramah Locks Company at 124 Piccadilly Lane, London. This company are still in production today, in Marylebone, London, and in Romford, Essex.
Bramah locks were famed for their resistance to lock picking and tampering. The company famously had a 'challenge' lock, displayed in the window of their London shop from 1790. It was mounted on a board with the inscription 'The artist who can make an instrument that will pick or open this lock shall receive 200 guineas the moment it is produced'. The challenge stood for over 67 years until at the Great Exhibition of 1851 the American locksmith, Alfred Charles Hobbs, was able to open the lock. It took him 51 hours over a 16 day period to do so!
The Interior
The interior has its original storage tray at the top, and a larger single compartment beneath. The tray has multiple storage compartments and two ring storage sections on either side. The front centre compartment has a circular ring that was originally designed to hold a pocket watch. This would now look lovely with a pendant or locket inside it.
The tray has padded velvet panels in its compartments and velvet coverings to the ring storage sections. It is finished with black leather and has black leather pull tabs. The leather has beautiful gilt decoration to compliment that on the exterior of the box.
The large base compartment has a padded velvet panel, as does the inside of the lid. The walls of the base compartment are lined with black leather, matching that on the tray.
All of the velvet is a beautiful emerald green shade!
Condition
This box is in extremely good condition for its 100 plus years of age. The leather has minor age related wear and there is some loss of gilding to the right band on the lid. The brass has been left unpolished and has a natural build up of tarnish.
The interior velvet panels/coverings are still in lovely condition with no splits or fraying.
There is some rippling to the red leathercloth covering on the bottom.

7.0 by 6.2cm with a 3.7cm diameter to the circular section.
Rear Narrow Compartment:

Ring Storage Sections x 2:
Each will hold approx 5 rings depending on their size.
