Beautiful antique jewellery box, made in France in the 19th century. Original quilted interior.
This is a beautiful antique jewellery box, made in France in the 19th century. It is complete with its original quilted interior and our restorer has beautifully refurbished the exterior!
The box is made of solid pine and this has been newly French polished and waxed. It has been beautifully finished with a Mahogany stain which highlights the lovely figuration of the pine!
The original worn handle has been replaced with a genuine fancy Victorian brass handle. We have also replaced the keyhole's old escutcheon with a beautiful Victorian solid brass escutcheon.
The corner protectors on the lid are solid brass and are completely original to the box. Its long piano hinges are also original and so too is the high-quality French lock. The lock is described in detail below.
The interior of the box is completely original and has not been altered in any way. It has beautiful quilted satin panels and matching satin linings. The quilted panels are deeply buttoned and are still snuggly seated.
A new felt lining has been added to the base, to protect the surfaces of your furniture.
Details Of The French Lock
This beautiful box has a wonderful French lock which was designed to deter thieves from stealing its contents. It was cleverly designed so that its key could be turned TWICE, to lock/unlock the box. The idea was that an intruder would believe the lock to be faulty when it did not open upon just one turn! The lock can, however, be operated with just one turn if desired.
