This is a beautiful vintage Italian jewellery box, made in Sorrento and dating to the 1940s.
The Exterior
This box is made of solid Mahogany. It has beautiful marquetry inlay on the lid, plus Boxwood stringing to the lid and all four sides.
The box is complete with its original 'stop' hinges which prevent the lid from falling back. It is also complete with its original lock. This is a high quality French lock with a double locking mechanism. Details of this are further down the page.
The Interior
The interior has two swing opening compartments, and a further larger compartment beneath.
The compartments have their original linings and deeply padded quilted panels. They also have their original hinges.
There is a print of an Italian coastal scene within the inside of the lid. This has replaced a broken mirror and was added by our box restorer. The print has a protective varnished finish.
About French locks
French locks have an excellent locking mechanism, designed to deter thieves from stealing the contents of a box! They were cleverly designed so that its key could be turned TWICE, to lock/unlock the box. The owner would hope that an intruder would be unaware of this secret mechanism, and believe the lock to be faulty when it did not open upon one turn. French locks can also be operated with just one turn if desired.

They are already very old and will naturally have some wear from age and use. We are not responsible for locks that malfunction from further age and use, once boxes are purchased.

Condition
This lovely box is in very good condition for its 85 plus years of age. All of the inlay is present and intact, and the box is structurally sound.
There is some fading to the rear of the lid from where the box has been positioned in sunlight.
This will not fade any further if the box is kept in a shady area.
There is slight rocking to the hinge on the right swing compartment, but it is still firmly attached.
The interior linings and panels are still in good condition with no splits. They have some marks from age and use.
