Beautiful perfume and jewellery casket which dates to the mid-Victorian period. Black leather finish with gilt decoration and gorgeous purple silk and velvet linings.

This is a beautiful perfume and jewellery casket which dates to the mid-Victorian period. It has a black leather finish with gilt decoration and gorgeous purple silk and velvet linings. The leather and linings are completely original and in their natural condition.
There is a drop-down panel to the front of the casket and the lid has a stylish sloping form. There is a beautifully shaped and finely engraved solid brass escutcheon to the keyhole.
The casket is complete with its original brass stop hinge, brass lock and key. The key is absolutely delightful! It is of a very charming small size and extremely decorative.
The interior has 2 compartments with perfume bottles and a jewellery storage drawer is beneath these. The drawer has a lovely brass swing handle and will hold little pieces of jewellery such as rings, earrings and brooches. It also makes safe storage for the casket's key whilst it is unlocked.
The panel to the front of the perfume compartments and the jewellery storage drawer, both have a leather finish with gilt stringing to match that on the exterior.
The perfume bottles are of a very high quality. They are made of very thick glass and are beautifully cut at the top. They have lovely silver plated lids with a screw fastening and cork seals. The bottles are not original to the casket but are genuine antiques from the same period.
Age
Circa 1865.
Condition
This charming casket is in lovely condition for its 150 years of age. There is some wear to the leather and interior silk, consistent with age and use. The casket has not simply been on display, it has been loved and used and has worn accordingly.
The wear is in the places you'd expect it to be, predominantly to the silk, inside the drop-down panel. There is some friction wear from the drawer, along the bottom edge, and some handling wear across the top edge. The silk has come away slightly from its cotton padding across the top.
The velvet is still lovely with just a few marks here and there, and there is minor light wear and a little staining to the silk inside the lid.
The leather to the exterior has a few little scuffs. The leather to the interior is still in excellent condition.
The bottles are near perfect with just one teeny chip to the bottom corner on one. The threads to the necks of the bottles and lids are excellent and hence the lids still screw on tightly and securely. The cork seals inside the lids are perfect and will prevent the leakage of perfume.
Note
If you are looking for a casket that has been used for its purpose and has wear to add to its charm, then this is the ideal one! It will not be suitable for those who prefer their antiques to be in near perfect condition.
