Lovely high-quality Victorian box with a black leather finish. The interior has specific compartments for Gold and Silver jewellery and Notes. The box has a working lock and key. Velvet and silk linings.
This is a very attractive antique box for the storage of both jewellery and bank/memo notes. It has a black leather finish and specific compartments for Gold and Silver jewellery and Notes.
The Exterior
This box has a deep black leather covering and very ornate brass decoration.
The lid has a beautifully shaped large brass plaque with a brass carrying handle, plus brass bands on either side. The front of the box has a complementary large brass escutcheon to the keyhole plus brass bands on either side.
The box is complete with its original chrome stop hinges which hold the lid upright. It also has its original working chrome lock and period key.
The box has a lovely drop-down front and this is where the lock is located.
The Interior
The interior has three compartments at the top plus a ring storage section behind the centre compartment. Beneath these compartments (behind the drop-down front) are the specialised compartments mentioned earlier. These compartments are within a drawer that slides out with ease by a leather pull tab. The lids of these compartments have 'Gold' and 'Silver' embossed upon them in silver fancy script. The lids have pull tabs which enable you to lift them up with ease. The inside of the lids have pockets for notes and are lined with quality pink watered silk. They have 'notes' stamped upon them in beautiful silver fancy script lettering.
All of the compartments, plus the inside of the lid, have their original burgundy velvet linings. The rest of the interior is finished with leather.
The top centre compartment has a circular ring which was originally designed to hold a pocket watch. It would now make lovely and practical storage for a large locket or brooch.
Age
Late Victorian, Circa 1890/1900.
Condition
This box is in very good condition for its age. It has sound structure and only minor light wear which is commensurate with age and honest use. There is some wear/tarnish to the brasswork as we'd expect on a box of this age.
