Antique leather jewellery box with crosshatch pattern.
This is a beautiful antique jewellery box dating to 1890/1900. Its exterior has a beautiful red leather finish, with a decorative crosshatch pattern, and its interior is complete with its original storage tray.
The box has a wonderful inset handle and a shield-shaped keyhole escutcheon. It is complete with its original brass lock and catch, and stop hinges which prevent the lid from falling back. The handle and escutcheon are nickel-plated.
The storage tray has three compartments with beautiful velvet linings, and its exterior has a leather covering with embossed gold trim.
The side compartments are an ideal size for small pieces of jewellery such as brooches and earrings. The centre compartment with its circular section was originally designed to hold a pocket watch. This could now hold a locket or pendant and would look lovely with a bracelet draped around it.
Beneath the tray is a larger compartment. This will hold bigger pieces of jewellery such as bangles, necklaces and watches. It has a lovely padded silk panel to the base, and its walls have a leather finish.
The inside of the lid has a padded silk panel which compliments that in the bottom compartment. The bottom of the box has a leather covering.
Condition
The box is in lovely condition for its age. The leather has some light age-related wear and a few little stains.
The velvet and satin linings are still in excellent condition!
Notes
The key is a replacement which locks the box securely.
The lid doesn't sit completely flush when the box is unlocked. This is all but rectified when the box is locked.
