This is a fabulous antique jewellery box, dating to the early 1900s. It is made of solid Pine and has a beautiful maroon leather finish on the lid.

The lid has an inset solid brass plate with a brass swing handle, and there is a beautiful tooled gilt frame to the leather.

The box is complete with its original key and the lock has a stylish large brass escutcheon.

The interior of this box is absolutely beautiful! It is complete with its original two storage trays, both of which are in excellent condition.

The top tray has 4 individual compartments, plus 2 ring storage sections. The centre front compartment has a circular section, originally designed to hold a pocket watch. This could now be used to hold a lovely large locket or pendant. The smaller compartments on either side are ideal for small pieces of jewellery such as brooches and earrings. The lengthier rear compartment is ideal for chains.

The second tray has four larger compartments, all of equal size. These are perfect for larger pieces of jewellery, such as slender bangles and watches.

Beneath the trays, in the base of the box, is a large and fairly deep single compartment. As you can see there is heaps of storage space in this beautiful box!

All of the compartments, plus the inside of the lid, are complete with their original velvet linings. The trays are beautifully finished with maroon leather and have tooled gilt stringing. The top tray is complete with its original leather pull tabs. The inner walls of the box are also finished with the same leather.

The box has its original solid brass lock and brass stop hinges which prevent the lid from falling back.

Age

Edwardian, circa 1900-1910.

Maker

This wonderful box was made by Thomas De La Rue & Company Limited. The company was founded by Thomas De La Rue in 1821. De La Rue moved to London and set up business as a stationer and printer. In 1831 he received a Royal Letter Patent from King William IV, for the manufacture of improved playing cards. Later in 1855, he began printing postage stamps, and in 1860 went on to print banknotes as well. The company have also manufactured writing instruments (in the 1830s), board games (in the 1930s), and fancy leather goods.

This prolific and well-established firm is still in business today. They produce a wide range of documents such as passports, traveller's cheques, bank cheques and postage stamps.

The box has the Thomas De La Rue & Co makers stamp, embossed upon it in lovely gilt lettering. Please see image 9.

Condition

The box is in excellent antique condition. All of the velvet linings are superb with no splits or fraying.

There is a minor faded patch on the leather to the lid, probably from exposure to strong sunlight at some point.

The leather to the bases of the trays and bottom of the box has some wear consistent with age and use. This is as expected.

The box is structurally sound and the pine is in very good condition with no splits. There is a small slither of pine missing to the bottom front edge of the lid. This is very minor.

The box locks securely and the hinges are in excellent working order.
