Beautiful small vintage jewellery box, made in Nice, in the French Riviera. Beautiful hand painted flowers to the lid and original quilted satin interior. Made in the 1920s as a souvenir box.
This is a lovely small vintage jewellery box, made in Nice, in the French Riviera. It is made of Olivewood from the Mediterranean and it dates to the 1920s.
The Exterior
This box is made of solid Olivewood which has beautiful figuration. It has a beautiful hand-painted spray of flowers on the lid, along with 'Nice' in hand-painted fancy script.
The box has its original pretty fan-shaped clasp which keeps the lid securely closed. It also has its original 'stop' hinges which hold the lid upright.
The Olivewood has a polished and varnished finish which has given it a lovely sheen and smoothness.
The Olivewood to the bottom of the box has been left in its natural state.
The Interior
The interior has a single storage compartment. The base of the compartment and the inside of the lid both have their original padded and quilted satin panels. The interior walls have their original satin linings. The satin is a lovely sage green shade.
History
This box was made as a souvenir for the Nice tourist market, probably by an Italian craftsman. Many Italians migrated to France in the early 20th century, bringing with them Olivewood from their country.
About Olivewood
Olivewood has a distinctive grain and rich colour which gives it a beautiful appearance. It has characteristic brown and yellow streaks which make for a beautiful contrast. These features make it a sought after wood for decorative items such as jewellery boxes.
Olivewood is also favoured for its hardness. It is a strong durable wood with a fairly high density and it takes well to cutting and polishing.
The Olive tree primarily grows in the coastal regions of the Mediterranean. Its wood has been used for many years by Italian box makers in particular. It is also a favoured wood in areas of the Holy Lands such as Jerusalem.
Condition
This lovely old box is in very good condition. It is structurally sound and has no chips or cracks.
The interior quilted panels and linings are still in lovely condition overall. They are neatly fitted and have no splits or fraying. There is minor discolouration and a couple of small marks to the satin.
All of the hand-painted decoration is present.
The interior satin is still in lovely condition. It has only minor light wear and a few little marks.
The purple, green and yellow painted flowers and leaves are still colourful.
The hinges and clasp are still in good working order.
