Refurbished Satin Lined Antique Victorian Jewellery Box

This is a beautiful antique Victorian box, dating to 1865/1870. It has been lovingly converted into a jewellery box and has a beautifully refurbished satin-lined interior.

The Exterior

This box has a lovely black ebonised finish and Gothic design. This style and colour was the height of Victorian fashion, following the death of Queen Victoria's beloved husband Prince Albert. During this sad period in Victoria's life, she had mourning jewellery and other commemorative items made, which were copied and became immensely popular.

The lid has beautifully applied bone decoration surrounded by solid brass. The brass is ornate with engraved detail and a gilded finish. All of the bone/brass decoration is securely attached with decorative metal studs.

There is a large decorative bone/brass escutcheon to the keyhole which complements the decoration on the lid.

The box is complete with its original brass stop hinges which hold the lid upright. It also has its original brass lock and stylish key.

The lock is not functional and the key is for decorative purposes only.

There is a new felt lining on the bottom of the box which will protect the surfaces of furniture.

A purple tassel has been added to the key to complement the interior linings.

The Interior

The entire interior has been beautifully refurbished by our skilled box restorer. It has a single storage compartment.

The compartment and the inside of the lid have stunning new purple satin panels which are padded. The walls of the compartment have new purple satin linings, framed by beautiful new gold silk cord trim. The walls inside the lid have new silver foil linings which beautifully reflect the purple of the satin. The colour of the satin matches the original satin which was worn and the new silver foil also matches the old foil which was worn.

This box started life as a Victorian ladies glove box. It would've sat upon a dressing table and held expensive silk gloves. It has now been lovingly converted into a functional jewellery box.

This box is in excellent condition for its age. It is structurally sound and the hinges are still in perfect working order.

There are some minor fine lines within the ebonised finish and some fine cracks within the bone of the escutcheon and central decoration to the lid. There are minor chips to the ebonised finish to the bottom corners of the box. The above is commensurate with age and honest use and does not spoil the beautiful appearance of the box. Neither does it affect the structure.

There is some tarnish to the gilding on the brass work. We have not polished this as doing so could remove the gilt finish.

The interior linings, being new, are in excellent clean and unworn condition.
