This is a beautiful vintage musical jewellery box, playing Lara's Theme. It was made in Sorrento in Italy and it dates to the 1970s/1980s.

The Exterior

The exterior has a beautiful teal blue enamelled finish which is rare on an Italian Sorrento box. The lid has
beautiful inlaid decoration and a lovely Mahogany veneered frame. The inlay is made from several varieties of wood. It is extremely decorative and features a mandolin, an oboe, a scrolled musical score sheet, plus flowers and leaves. The enamel is vitreous and has a subtle shimmer.

The entire exterior has a smooth and glossy, polished and varnished finish.

The box is complete with its original gold metal piano hinge. This is a quality stop hinge which prevents the lid from falling back.

The box stands raised on its original gold metal bun feet.

The bottom of the box has retained its original song title and Made In Sorrento Italy, labels.

The Interior

The interior has a beautiful Mahogany veneer to match the frame on the lid. It has a single small storage compartment on the left, and the musical movement is cased to the right. There is shallow storage space upon the ledge of the casing.

The compartment and casing have soft brushed felt linings. These are a lovely burgundy red shade.

The Musical Movement

The movement plays the beautiful tune 'Lara's Theme', from the 1965 film Dr Zhivago. This was composed by Maurice Zarre. A musical box plays Lara's Theme at the beginning of the 1977 film, A Spy Who Loved Me. Lara's Theme, also known as 'Somewhere My Love', has been performed by several artists including Johnny Mathis, Andy Williams and Ray Conniff.

The movement is in perfect working order and plays the tune at its correct speed. The music stops as it should, when the movement is unwound or when the lid is closed.

Operating The Musical Movement

The movement is operated via the winding key on the bottom of the box. Six turns of the key are required to fully wind the movement.

Notes On Vintage Musical Movements

As with all musical boxes, care should be taken not to overwind the movement. Over winding will result in the movement malfunctioning. We are not responsible for movements that are overwound or for movements which deteriorate from further age and use, once boxes are purchased.

Please check the movement is operating correctly as soon as you receive the box.

Please read our returns policy which includes our policy on musical movements.
