This is a beautiful antique Victorian jewellery box, dating to around 1880. It is made of papier-mache and has a stunning rare 'Fernware' design. The Ferns have a beautiful symbolic meaning. The interior has a stunning new refurbishment.

The Exterior

This box has a glossy black lacquered 'Japanned' finish and a stunning enamel painted lid. The lid features a variety of colourful Ferns and a spray of vibrant yellow sweet peas. The enamelled background is a lovely unusual colour. The lids on most Fernware boxes are a solid brown or black. This one has an unusual shade of brown and features shading around the Ferns.

The box has beautiful scalloped edges which are detailed with beautiful gilding.

The box has a lovely metal keyhole escutcheon and is complete with its original brass stop hinges. These hold the lid upright. It is also complete with its original working lock and key. The key needs to be turned fully clockwise to unlock the box.

Notes About Antique Locks

We would like to make you aware that antique locks can occasionally malfunction. They are already very old and will naturally have some wear from age and use. We are not responsible for locks that malfunction from further age and use once boxes are purchased.

Please ensure the lock is still working as soon as you receive your box. It will be checked again prior to posting.

You can view our full returns policy which includes locks, by visiting our Payments And Returns page.

The Interior

The interior has been beautifully refurbished by our very skilled box restorer. It has a single storage compartment and its edges have the same black lacquered finish as the exterior.

The compartment and the inside of the lid have beautiful new blue satin linings. The edges to the inside of the lid have wonderful new foil linings. These have replaced the original worn ones. The inside of the lid has been beautifully finished with vibrant gold silk braid trim. This compliments the gilding on the box. The foil beautifully reflects the blue satin and gold trim.

The Victorian Symbolism

The Ferns symbolise humility and sincerity. In Victorian times Sweet Peas were given to show thanks and were symbolic of blissful pleasure.

English Victorian 'Japanning'

'Japanning' (the name given for making objects look like examples of Japanese lacquer work) was very popular during the Victorian period. The Victorians loved the look of Japanese lacquered items, but it was not their intention to produce replicas of these. Instead, they used a very similar style of lacquer and decorated their items with more 'English' looking subjects.

Japanese lacquer was made from native trees but this often cracked in the cold British climate. The Victorians, therefore, used tar and pitch with papier mache, to create a very similar, smooth black surface.

Condition

This beautiful box is in remarkable condition for its 140 years of age. It has sound structure and no damage.

There is no loss to the painted decoration and the colours are still beautifully vivid.

A small amount of the gilding has rubbed off. This is mainly on the sides of the box from where its been handled.
